As the Chronicle reports, Champion installed them himself in the last week on the lawn west of Masonic Avenue, east of the playground.

The title of the piece: An Attempted Murder.

An Attempted Murder by Jack Champion. Photo via Building 180/Big Art Loop

On the Big Art Loop website, the nonprofit describes the sculpture saying, "Balancing humor with unease, Attempted Murder invites reflection on how we navigate tension: how we argue, how we listen, and how we choose to remain in relationship, even when it’s uncomfortable."

The Big Art Loop "is a public art initiative transforming San Francisco into an open-air gallery, placing bold, large-scale sculpture across 34 miles of the city." The installation last year of Marco Cochrane's 45-foot-tall nude woman sculpture, titled R-Evolution, is part of the initiative, and Building 180 is seeking private funders for more large-scale installations of existing works.

One upcoming installation is The Pushers, by Zambian artist George Mubanga, which depicts two Sysphian figures pushing large spheres, and which is apparently coming to the McLaren Park Overlook.

As Aliza Marks, the CEO of Building 180, tells the Chronicle, "The Big Art Loop is about putting public art into the neighborhoods. All of these sculptures are existing works of art. We are bringing them out of storage and into public view."

The thing with the crows is that crows actually have been proliferating in San Francisco in larger numbers than in years' past, they're loud and cocky, and they're reportedly killing off the local pigeon population. They're taking over basically, like in Hitchcock's The Birds. And to hear Champion describe it, the crows around the Panhandle might even be flattered by this oversize depiction of them now on display.

So, kind of scary, really.

Sonoma Developer Accused of Defrauding Dozens of Retirees to Be Evicted From His Estate

After weeks of frustration among the victims of the Ponzi-like scheme allegedly perpetrated by Sonoma County real estate investor Ken Mattson that he was still living in the lap of luxury, Mattson and his wife are being evicted from their Sonoma estate.

SF News

ponzi scheme

sonoma county

Real Estate

fraud

Jay Barmann

After weeks of frustration among the victims of the Ponzi-like scheme allegedly perpetrated by Sonoma County real estate investor Ken Mattson that he was still living in the lap of luxury, Mattson and his wife are being evicted from their Sonoma estate.

Ken Mattson and his wife Stacy, who have been fighting an eviction proceeding that stemmed from their bankruptcy filing, are going to be evicted from their $6 million Sonoma hills preoperty on June 15. As the Press Democrat was first to report, the Sonoma home will be sold, and its proceeds will become part of a restitution fund that will be used to pay back investors who lost money with Mattson.

Mattson was arrested one year ago, outside of a Napa gym, after months of rumbling around Sonoma County about the neglect of the local businesses Mattson had ammassed, the sale of property at fire-sale prices, and a growing number of angry investors seeking to get their money back. Those investors, as the Chronicle reports, were mostly "middle-income retirees" who thought they were buying shares in Mattson's ever-growing real estate portfolio, once said to be worth $413 million.

Instead, Mattson allegedly spent their money, buying the Sonoma estate, as well as an almost $10 million home designed by Julia Morgan in Piedmont, in addition to luxury cars like a Rolls Royce he was seen driving around Sonoma in until last year.

We learned last month that Mattson is expected to take a plea deal in federal court, pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud, for which he could spend up to 20 years in prison.

The eviction proceeding is related to one of the web of civil and criminal lawsuits against Mattson, as defrauded victims seek to be made whole. A bankruptcy judge is overseeing the liquidation of all of the assets owned by Mattson and his former business partner Timothy LeFever, who has claimed that Mattson acted alone in the fraud scheme.

As the Chronicle reports, the Piedmont home was sold earlier this month for $8.4 million, after going on the market two years ago for $9.9 million.

One victim, Santa Rosa resident Maria Crane, expressed frustration last week, speaking to the Chronicle, about the slowness of the wheels of justice. "We’re trying to keep our home, and he’s still living in a mansion that he used our money to buy," Crane said.

Meanwhile, some of the hospitality businesses Mattson built or purchased, including Cornerstone Sonoma and the Sonoma Cheese Factory on the town square, have been bought by new owners and are humming along once more. Cornerstone sold in December for $10.65 million, and two other historic properties near Sonoma Square, including the General's Daughter mansion and wedding venue (pictured above) sold last month for $6 million.

Mattson is due back in federal court on June 15, at which point he is expected to enter a plea, and after which a federal judge will decide the length of his sentence.

Previously: Sonoma County Real Estate Investor Ken Mattson to Take Guilty Plea In Federal Fraud Case

Top image courtesy of the General's Daughter.

Memorial Day Links: Post-Carnaval Stabbing Leaves One Critically Injured

A suspect was arrested following a stabbing in the Mission District Sunday afternoon; the repaving on 19th Avenue is mostly over; and Pope Leo has issued an encyclical focused on the dangers of AI.

SF News

morning links

carnaval

Jay Barmann

A stabbing on Sunday afternoon in SF's Mission District, as Carnaval festivities were dying down, left one person with life-threatening injuries, and a suspect is in custody. The stabbing happened around 3:15 pm near 19th and Mission streets, which is on the Carnaval parade route, but after the parade had passed. That nonprofit is Booker T. Washington Community Service Center, which is based nearby in Lower Pac Heights, and which already has multiple contracts with the city.

Ella Hill Hutch Community Center is a 30-year-old community hub that provides youth services, healthy food assistance programs, and summer and afterschool programs for neighborhood children. Last year it became a casualty of a scandal involving the former leader of the city's Dream Keeper initiative, Sheryl Davis, and her romantic partner/housemate James Spingola, who were both criminally charged in March for a raft of alleged felonies including self-dealing and the personal use of nonprofit funds — and Spingola was the head of a nonprofit, previously run by Davis, called Collective Impact, which had a contract with the city to operate Ella Hill Hutch.

The fallout from the scandal appears to have created rifts in the Fillmore neighborhood, which has historically been a center of Black cultural life for San Francisco, and has accumulated a growing set of grievances over the city's inhumane redevelopment efforts five and six decades ago, the trauma of which has been compounded in recent years by benign neglect. The most recent grievance: the closure of the neighborhood's only supermarket, a Safeway that was built with redevelopment funds over 40 years back, and which is now slated for demolition and another redevelopment as mostly market-rate housing.

The Chronicle reported last week on pushback from community leaders over the management contract for Ella Hill Hutch Community Center, which included a quote from longtime neighborhood elder statement, the Reverend Doctor Amos C. Brown. Speaking for others in the community, Brown pointed to the director of Booker T. Washington Community Service Center, former Davis ally and former Human Rights Commissioner Shakirah Simley, saying, "She aspires to this position in the community, but she is not connected with it. She has not communicated with people nor demonstrated a sense of the history of this community or any knowledge of the collective values that truly make for strong minority communities."

So, now, just days after that Chronicle report, the city has reversed course, per the Chronicle, and that no-bid lease with Booker T has been scrapped. The Recreation and Parks Department is going to be temporarily taking over Ella Hill Hutch while community stakeholders have a chance to give input on a future operator to the city.

A spokesperson for Mayor Daniel Lurie tells the paper that while Booker T remains a "valued partner to the city," they will be pursuing a more competitive process with "thoughtful community engagement" for the next lease.

"We are ensuring our kids remain safe and no family or child is left without access to services and support this summer," the spokesperson said, regarding the temporary Rec & Parks takeover.

The board of Booker T. Washington Community Service Center also issued a statement saying, "We share a deep commitment to the Fillmore community and to ensuring that every family, senior and child in this neighborhood has access to the services and support they deserve... We believe the path forward requires a broader, more deliberate process that includes additional community input."

The neighborhood remains upset by the now seven-year vacancy at the Fillmore Heritage Center, a product of redevelopment that was completed in the mid aughts and promised to revitalize a long dormant corridor in the Fillmore — and to bring jazz music back to the neighborhood as well via a San Francisco branch of Yoshi's, the famed Oakland jazz venue and sushi restaurant. A decade later, both Yoshi's and the other restaurant in the center, 1600 on Fillmore, had closed, and the process to find new tenants for the spaces has now dragged on for nearly another decade after that.

The scandal involving Davis, who also formerly led the Human Rights Commission during the London Breed administration, cast a pall over the Dream Keeper initiative at large, which had been a racial equity effort in 2020 and 2021 to redirect city funds from law enforcement to Black-led nonprofits. It came to light in 2024 that Davis, in addition to allegedly misusing funds, had directed $1.5 million in city grants to Collective Impact in an apparentconflict of interest, given that it was run by her live-in partner, Spingola.

A city audit later found that the total amount of questionable and/or frivolous spending by Davis, via the Human Rights Commission, was around $4.6 million.

Previously: Fillmore Residents Say They Feel Ignored By City Over Deal to Keep Community Center Open

Sunday Links: State of Emergency For Orange County Chemical Leak

Gov. Owners Tal Mor and Jodi Geren and pastry chef Kristina Costa are bringing their love of Jewish diaspora baking to the Inner Richmond, with a plan to open a second Loquat at 4555 California Street, at 18th Avenue, currently a location of Beanstalk Cafe, sometime next year. The new location will allow for some expanded bread making capabilities, and there are plans to have grab-and-go challah sandwiches and more.

And a new Turkish bakery-café called Oklava Café is opening soon on the ground floor of Saluhall, the IKEA-adjacent food hall at 945 Market Street. As the Chronicle reports, owners Aziz Aslan and Elif Uzun opened the first Oklava in downtown Palo Alto three years ago, and they also own the bakery-restaurant Turquaz in SoMa, which opened last year. An opening date for the new café has not yet been set, but it is taking over the central counter space previously occupied by Cheezy's Artisan Pizza.

Top image: A dish of Wagyu beef at Nightbird. Only 16 warnings were issued from August 2025 through April, citywide.

According to KTVU, residents and merchants in the Mission, Mid-Market, and Chinatown say illegal vending markets continue to block sidewalks, fuel retail theft, and contribute to ongoing violence and disorder as they wait for stronger enforcement from the city.

Residents say that when the city clears illegal vendors near the 16th and 24th Street BART plazas and in the Tenderloin, they spread the activity further onto side streets and arrests alone are not solving the problem long term.

Neighbors near 20th and Capp streets say drug dealing and drug use have increasingly spread into residential blocks and around Alioto Mini Park, which Sergeant Brandon Rock of the Mission Corridor Task Force, acknowledged, while adding that enforcement for other offenses has increased.

"The neighborhood is far safer than it's been in a lot of time in history," Rock tells KTVU. "So the violence is not the issue that we once had, but the open drug-use and the dirtiness and the unsafe feeling sidewalks, I totally understand."

More than two dozen residents recently signed a letter calling for surveillance cameras, increased police presence, and a coordinated response to encampments and open-air drug activity.

"In the last month, we're part of the statistic, we've had our house broken into, not the first time, my wife was assaulted on the street, not the first time, and so it's really scary, it's to the point where she won't leave the house," said Mission resident Bryant Chu, speaking to KTVU. "Now we're seeing fentanyl users just folded down where they used to not be and they're just taking up a lot of the sidewalk space."

The new state law, authored by Senator Scott Wiener and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom last fall, authorized San Francisco police officers to cite people caught selling suspected stolen merchandise without permits or proof of purchase. The legislation, which only applies to San Francisco, as Mission Local reported at the time, was meant to address limits created by a 2018 state law that decriminalized sidewalk vending.

The law took effect last December when the Board of Supervisors approved a list of more than 100 commonly stolen items that would be subject to enforcement, per the Chronicle.

Public Works and police officials said this week they are still working with the City Attorney’s Office to finalize how the law will be enforced and ensure it can withstand legal challenges.

Officials said the city has been building systems to track repeat offenders across agencies and preserve seized goods as evidence for possible criminal cases. Public Works spokesperson Rachel Gordon reportedly said the law has not yet been used but is expected to be implemented once those issues are resolved.

Enforcement powers still remain limited under the new law, as Public Works inspectors must first issue written warnings before police can intervene. Vendors accused of continuing to sell stolen goods can then face escalating fines for repeat violations within an 18-month period, while continued offenses could eventually lead to misdemeanor charges and up to six months in jail.

SFPD spokesperson Evan Sernoffsky said illegal vending remains a “top priority,” while

The Chronicle reports that starting next month, eight officers from other stations will be reassigned to the Mission to help address growing illegal vending and open-air drug activity, according to Mission Station Captain Sean Perdomo.

Previously: Scott Wiener Teams Up With Mayor Lurie on Proposed New Illegal Street Vending Law

Image: Joe Kukura/SFist

Woman Suspected of Burglarizing Gym Lockers In SF Gets Arrested, Has Rap Sheet

A woman who is suspected of breaking into gym lockers in San Francisco and across the Bay Area and stealing credit cards has been taken into custody.

SF News

gyms

burglaries

Jay Barmann

A woman who is suspected of breaking into gym lockers in San Francisco and across the Bay Area and stealing credit cards has been taken into custody.

The SFPD announced Thursday that, following a monthslong investigation, they have arrested 40-year-old Andrania Yancy on suspicion of burglary. Yancy is believed to have committed burglaries in gym locker rooms in San Francisco, as well as in El Cerrito, Berkeley, Santa Clara, Oakley, San Mateo County, Contra Costa County, and Orange County.

Prior to her arrest, Yancy already had multiple stay-away orders issued from "multiple fitness businesses in San Francisco," according to the SFPD.

The SFPD's Financial Crimes Unit investigated the case, and learned that Yancy's primary modus operandi was to walk into a gym or fitness studio, buy a day pass, and then go to work breaking into lockers. She would allegedly steal credit cards from gym-goers wallets, and then use them before the victims realized they were missing.

Several fitness studios in the Marina District reportedly aided in the investigation, along with their members, helping to identify Ms. Yancy.

Yancy was located in Sacramento and arrested there on May 18, with help from a multi-agency contingent that included the US Marshals Service Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force.

She was subsequently booked into San Francisco County Jail on nine warrants, issued out of SF and the eight other jurisdictions mentioned above, where gym-locker burglaries also occurred.

As KPIX reports, Yancy has a rap sheet of similar crimes dating back to 2008, and she has also had a pattern of failing to appear in court after posting bond.

While an arrest has been made, this is still an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444, or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.” Tipsters can remain anonymous.

Top image: Photo by Claudio Schwartz
