Yolo County officials are warning residents that the remaining ash and debris from last month’s deadly fireworks warehouse blaze could still be hazardous, and have declared a local health emergency while they sift through that rubble.

It is now six weeks since the Yolo County fireworks warehouse explosion claimed the lives of seven people. And there are still plenty of legal recriminations ahead for the owners and operators of that Esparto, California fireworks warehouse that belonged to the company ironically named Devastating Pyrotechnics. But there are still more safety ramifications to worry about too from that fireworks blast that has since been named the Oakdale Fire, as KPIX reports that Yolo County officials have declared a local health emergency over the hazardous explosive materials that may still be in the remaining ash from the fire.

This emergency declaration is separate from the health emergency that was declared there immediately after the July 1 fire, as that declaration was intended to streamline first responders’ efforts. This declaration is a warning about toxic materials that may still be active near the fire site.

"Today's local health emergency declaration for the Oakdale Fire allows Yolo County to request support from state and federal health agencies for testing and any necessary cleanup if hazardous materials from fireworks are found in the soil, water, or air at or near the explosion site," Yolo County public health officer Dr. Aimee Sisson said in a statement.

The emergency declaration does not cover the entire town of Esparto, but only the area within a half-mile radius of the explosion site, near County Roads 23 and 86A.

Meanwhile, the more meaningful developments since the explosion may have been happening closer to home here in the Bay Area. About a week after the blast, police and federal agents raided a San Francisco home that was listed as the headquarters of Devastating Pyrotechnics. Also, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors have asked the California Department of Justice to perform its own probe into the blast, as two Yolo County Sheriff's Office employees are listed as the owners of the land on which the warehouse sat.
