Herchen, a prominent Silicon Valley engineer, was in Taiwan on a business trip, per the Voice.

While Herchen is the primary suspect, prosecutors cannot charge him with homicide in the US because the federal statute covering killings abroad applies only to American citizens, according to Redwood City-based attorney Andrew Watters, who represents Ku's family.

However, following a civil trial last summer, the Santa Clara DA filed perjury charges against Herchen in September due to inconsistencies in his depositions, and he is currently awaiting trial in that case.

Herchen had claimed Ku had gone to visit her parents who live in Taiwan, but her parents said they were unaware she was in the country. They were also reportedly unaware who Herchen was and that she had gotten married.

Herchen said in court depositions that he dropped Ku off at the train station in the city of Hualien to visit her parents at their home near Taipei on the morning of November 29, 2019. But Ku’s parents said she hadn’t been to their new home before and wasn’t familiar with the area, according to Palo Alto Online.

In the days after Alice Ku was reported missing, her family hired Watters, along with San Jose attorney Todd Davis, who quickly uncovered details about her life that had been unknown to them, including her marriage to Herchen and that she had moved to Mountain View from her previous home in Sunnyvale without telling them.

Neighbors in Mountain View reportedly said Ku and Herchen frequently argued about money and a possible pregnancy. Herchen also lived primarily at a different residence in Palo Alto.

Additionally, Herchen was reportedly still married to his second wife, Melissa Yu, when he first met Ku. Yu died from cardiac arrest due to obstructive sleep apnea in 2017, with the medical examiner noting that there were multiple bruises on Yu’s body, but there was no mention of the cause of the bruises.

Per PA Online, investigators with Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau said records from hotel logs, surveillance footage, phone data, and internet activity contradict Herchen’s account of events. Authorities said Ku’s phone showed activity in Hualien but not near the train station where he claimed to have dropped her off, and Ku’s email activity stopped abruptly on November 29, breaking from her normal usage.

Lead investigator Li Tsung Su concluded she was killed on or before that date and identified Herchen as a homicide suspect, citing “critical inconsistencies” in his statements, as PA Online reports. Officials issued an arrest warrant in December 2020, which remains active, with assistance from the FBI and the American Institute in Taiwan, though they’ve been unable to extradite Herchen due to the lack of formal diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Taiwan.

“We have determined, based on our investigation including the above-referenced facts, that: Alice Ku is dead and is the victim of a homicide; that Alice Ku was killed on or before November 29, 2019, and that Defendant Harald Herchen is a suspect in that homicide,” said Yang Chi Lee, director of international criminal affairs for the agency.

Last summer, a Santa Clara County jury awarded more than $23 million last summer to Ku’s family in a wrongful death case filed in 2021, as the Voice reports.

Testimony from that civil trial led the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to pursue perjury charges against Herchen, citing inconsistencies in his depositions. Herchen was arrested at his Los Altos home last September and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Rob Baker.

Herchen’s defense has denied the allegations and said he plans to plead not guilty.

Information was added to this post after publishing explaining how Herchen can't be prosecuted in the US because he's a Canadian citizen, which was unintentionally omited.

The post was updated with additional information about the death of Herchen's second wife.

Image: Alice Ku's Family

SF Community Reunites Dog of SoMa Homicide Victim With Relatives

Carl Jones, Jr., who grew up in SF’s Fillmore District, was fatally shot on Sixth Street in the South of Market neighborhood on March 3, and a neighbor who rescued Jones’s dog Teddy G at the scene collaborated with others to reunite him with one of Jones’s siblings.

SF News

homicide

murder

south of market

soma

Mission District

pets

dogs

fillmore district

district attorney's office

Leanne Maxwell

Carl Jones, Jr., who grew up in SF’s Fillmore District, was fatally shot on Sixth Street on March 3, and a neighbor who rescued Jones’s dog Teddy G at the scene collaborated with others to reunite him with one of Jones’s siblings.

As Mission Local reports, 43-year-old Jones lived at the Henry Hotel on Sixth Street with his small dog Teddy Graham. In the early morning of March 3, Jones was shot near Sixth and Mission streets in the SoMa neighborhood.

Neighbor Charles Toyner told Mission Local he was walking up Sixth Street when he heard two shots and quickly hid behind a pole. He then saw Teddy G run across the street in distress. Toyner caught Teddy G and told officers he’d take care of him.

Jones died at a hospital shortly after the shooting, and police arrested 33-year-old suspect Siaosi Aleamotuay later that day.

As Bay City News reports, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office charged Aleamotuay with murder, along with an allegation that he personally used a deadly firearm, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to prosecutors, Aleamotuay was seen on surveillance footage removing a gun from his backpack, crossing the street, and shooting Jones, who didn’t appear to be armed, per Bay City News. A possible motive has not been released.

Mission Local reports that Jones grew up in San Francisco’s Fillmore neighborhood with his siblings, and his family sometimes struggled with food and stable housing.

Jones lost both of his parents as a teenager. His father died when he was 16, and his mother died two years later. He spent time in the foster care system and eventually lived at Edgewood, a group home in the Ingleside neighborhood, per Mission Local.

Despite those challenges, Jones excelled in school and earned a 4.0 grade point average, particularly in reading and English. His sister told Mission Local he toured several historically Black colleges and universities and had the potential to attend nearly any school he wanted, but life circumstances ultimately got in the way.

“He never lost his big heart,” she said. “He was always loving. He always had a smile on his face. He would give you advice, and it would always be supportive.”

Mission Local reports that after the shooting, Toyner contacted the Gubbio Project for help locating Jones's family. Outreach worker Terry Morris told Mission Local Jones was remembered for having “bright eyes” and a warm, approachable presence. Morris also recalled how devoted Jones was to Teddy G.

Rio Amor, a drug-overdose educator and substance-abuse specialist at the nonprofit, helped Toyner track down Jones’s relatives. In the meantime, people who met Teddy G offered to adopt him.

Per Mission Local, Amor reached Jones’s sister Amelia in San Jose the following day, and she and other relatives drove to San Francisco to bring the dog home.

Photo of Carl Jones via Amelia Jones/Mission Local

Two Killed, Five Injured by Stray Bullets During Late-Night Fight in Oakland Bar

Early morning gunfire broke out during an argument inside EZ's Lounge on 14th Street in downtown Oakland Saturday, killing two people, including an eighth grade teacher, and injuring five others who are expected to survive.

SF News

Oakland

shooting

homicide

downtown oakland

First Fridays

bystander

stray bullet shooting

Leanne Maxwell

Early morning gunfire broke out during an argument inside EZ's Lounge on 14th Street in downtown Oakland Saturday, killing two people, including an eighth grade teacher, and injuring five others who are expected to survive.

The shooting happened around 3:30 am Saturday at EZ's Lounge on 14th Street in downtown Oakland near City Hall, following the popular First Friday street festival. As the Bay Area News Group reports, police said the fight began inside the bar, but none of the seven victims were believed to be the intended targets.

The News Group reports that the victim who died at the scene was identified as 33-year-old Latetia “Teesh” Bobo, an eighth grade teacher at Caliber Beta Academy in San Pablo, as well as a writer and producer in the music industry. As the Chronicle reports, a 25-year-old man, whose name hasn't been released, later died at the hospital Saturday morning around 11:30 am.

Bay City News reports that five other people were injured, and three were hospitalized in stable condition. And as we said in previous coverage, that liquor store triple-homicide was merely over a street marijuana deal gone bad.

That senseless loss of life becomes even more senseless, as new information has come to light. The Bay Area News Group is now reporting that the entire conflict that left three men dead was “motivated by a conflict over a $10 marijuana deal.”

As KTVU explains, that new information is coming to light because a third man has been arrested in connection with the triple-homicide. That suspect is the alleged marijuana street dealer, 58-year-old Jamaal Myers. Myers did not pull the trigger or kill anyone, but he was carrying a gun on him at the time. According to KTVU, “Myers has nine prior felony convictions, including two for assault, and several prior gun convictions, and is legally barred from possessing guns.”

Myers has pleaded not guilty, and has been released after posting $100,000 bail.

The man who allegedly did pull the trigger, and is accused of killing the three victims, is 40-year-old Darrell Tatmon. Tatmon is facing three counts of murder, and could potentially face life in prison with enhancements.

A third suspect, 37-year-old Angelo Lemelle Pharr, was also arrested and has been charged with assault.

Two of the victims killed were brothers, Luis Valdez-Gomez and Kevin Andrew Valdez-Gomez, who were buying the marijuana outside the liquor store. The brother Kevin reportedly did draw his own gun once the conflict between the dealer and the customers started. The third victim, 54-year-old Miguel Ramirez, was merely an innocent bystander who happened to be shopping in the store at the time, and was caught in the crossfire.

Related: East Bay Man Charged With Triple-Murder Over East Oakland Liquor Store Pot Deal Gone Bad [SFist]

Image: Google Street View

Sunday Links: Ninety-Five Percent of Oakland Teachers Vote to Authorize Strike

A body that was found in Napa County is believed to be connected to the kidnapping of a Sikh man in the Central Valley; cartel violence has taken over Puerto Vallarta; and Oakland’s teachers’ union is demanding a 12% pay increase as 95% of educators voted to strike.

SF News

morning links

Oakland

teachers

strike

union

health care

nurses

napa county

lake berryessa

tracy

homicide

donald trump

Secret Service

antioch

school shootings

security guard

Winter Olympics

fentons creamery

Leanne Maxwell

Ninety-five percent of Oakland teachers voted to authorize a strike Friday, with their union demanding a 12% wage increase. Over 60% of union members are reportedly unable to afford the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment, which has led to around 400 educators leaving the district per year. As the Costa Rican paper the Tico Times reports, the intruders then reportedly assaulted Van Dyke and fled with some of the couple’s valuables, including one of their vehicles.

Per the Chronicle, it’s unclear what happened during the events leading up to Van Dyke's death, but his body was found under a bed with a sheet over his head. He appeared to be asphyxiated and had multiple stab wounds, and there was reportedly a knife found next to his body.

“My brother was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody,” Kurt’s brother, Peter Van Dyke, told the Chronicle over text. “Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him. Everyone that he met knew this about him.”

The Chronicle reports that Van Dyke was the owner of Hotel Puerto Viejo, a popular hostel in the beach town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, which is a short drive from his home in the town of Cahuita, both located in the southern portion of the Limón province. The paper notes that while drug trafficking and other types of organized crime are present in the province, the small beach towns where Van Dyke spent his time are typically limited to petty crimes, such as theft, pickpocketing, and break-ins.

“We have the Police delegation in Playa Negra, the cantonal, which is the most modern in the country,” wrote Roger Sams, president of the Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, per the site Surfer. “We are working hand in hand on security issues. It shocks us and hurts us, because the Caribbean has been very calm.”

“There have been no cases of violence reported like this against tourists. In recent months there has been no violence or assaults,” Sams continued. “This is an isolated case, he is the owner of a hotel, not a tourist, it has not to do with tourists and the people who come to visit us.”

As the site Islands.com reports, gang and drug trafficking-related crimes have historically been centered around the province’s capital, Puerto Limón, but the opening of a new port there in 2019 has resulted in the spread of organized crime and trafficking into surrounding areas. Per the site, homicides in Puerto Limón account for 25% of all the homicides in the country.

Per the Chronicle, Van Dyke, who got his first surfboard at age 7, was born in Santa Cruz to Gene and Betty Van Dyke, two pioneering, surf-loving parents who were also prominent in the farming community, as the family has owned Van Dyke Ranch in Gilroy’s Gavilan Mountains for 60 years.

“Kurt loved the ocean, our farm, animals and his family,” said Peter Van Dyke, per Surfer. “It’s a very sad time because of all the great memories we have growing up together, farming and surfing.”

“We remember your spirit, your energy, and the light you brought into the lives around you,” wrote a friend of Van Dyke on social media. “Some people leave footprints — you left waves.”

Image: Kurt Van Dyke/Facebook

Day Around the Bay: Oakland Zoo’s Tiger Lola Euthanized After Infection From Injured Paw

Tesla Cybertruck sales decreased by 48% in 2025; Trump’s latest Truth Social post frenzy involved TikTok and Newsom; and one of Oakland Zoo’s tigers has died from an infection that spread after a foreign object became lodged in her paw.

SF News

datb

datb day around the bay

tesla

tesla model 3

oakland zoo

sfpd

homicide

Kennedy Center

Gavin Newsom

antioch

Leanne Maxwell

Local:

One of Oakland Zoo’s three tigers has died after a foreign object became lodged in her paw and the infection spread throughout her body. Lola and the two other tigers were rescued from an abandoned roadside zoo in Oklahoma before they were brought to Oakland. Officers with Cloverdale Police arrived at the scene along with Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies, and they found a victim there suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a release from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, authorities quickly learned the name of a suspect from witness statements, and they identified the suspect as 56-year-old Lawrence Cassidy of Cloverdale. Police also gathered information that Cassidy had driven away from the scene in a white Ford SUV, and that SUV was later found in Healdsburg.

"Additional investigative leads revealed that Cassidy had been driven from Healdsburg to a residence in the 1500 block of Brush Creek Road in Santa Rosa," the sheriff's office said.

Around 1:26 am Sunday, November 23, the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team, Hostage Negotiations Team, and Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit were deployed to the scene. A three-hour standoff then ensued in which multiple rounds were reportedly shot from the residents at officers. A SWAT armored vehicle may have been struck by gunfire.

Chemical agents were deployed into the home, and hostage negotiators reportedly tried to contact Cassidy both by telephone and by loudspeaker, but they had no response.

Sometime around 4:30 am, a drone and bomb-disposal robot were deployed into the home, and Cassidy was reportedly found deceased. Police found the man with a gunshot wound and declared him dead at the scene, though did not release his identity at the time.

Four days later, the Chronicle confirmed the victim was the general manager of North Beach strip club The Condor, 60-year-old Mark Calcagni. The Chronicle describes Calcagni as the club's general manager, though KTVU identifies him as the owner of The Condor. Either way, Calcagni is remembered by colleagues as an impactful figure on the North Beach strip club scene.

“He became one of the Mount Rushmores of Broadway,” Wolfgang Welch, general manager of nearby club Vanity told the Chronicle. Welch actually took over for Calcagni as Vanity general manager when Calcagni decided managing two clubs was too much for him.

The Chronicle also confirms that Calcagni was shot just 350 feet from his Brookwood Avenue home, less than a mile from the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Santa Rosa police say they currently have no suspects in the shooting, and they have not recovered or identified a weapon.

"Though any time a suspect of a violent crime remains at large it presents a potential risk, we do not believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety," the department said Monday in a press release, according to KGO.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Santa Rosa Police Department at (707) 543-3590, or submit an anonymous tip online at www.srcity.org/CrimeTips. The Sonoma County Alliance Community Engagement and Safety Fund is offering $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Related: Four Arrested for April North Beach Shooting That Killed One, Injured Four Others [SFist]

Image: Kevin Y via Yelp

Saturday Links: Extended 101 Carpool Hours Blamed for North Bay Traffic ‘Carmageddon’

The Cupertino Whole Foods that had multiple pest infestations is set to reopen soon; new research from Stanford found that wildfire smoke is the most dangerous aspect of climate change in the US; and North Bay commuters are experiencing average speeds of 15 miles an hour along Highway 101.

SF News

morning links

marina district

addiction

caltrans

north bay

highway 101

traffic

Stanford

Stanford University

wildfire

climate change

santa rosa

homicide

Cupertino

Whole Foods

antioch

san leandro

human trafficking

Leanne Maxwell

North Bay commuters are saying Caltrans’s new, extended carpool hours along Highway 101 between Windsor and Mill Valley are making traffic much worse, calling it “carmaggedon.” The new hours are 5–10 am southbound and 3–7 pm northbound, and the average speed is reportedly 15 miles per hour.
