Torontoist spent its week uncovering who was behind mysterious ads for a drug called "Obay" that popped up across the country (Scientology? Frank Shepard Fairey?), first tracing them to an advocacy group called Colleges Ontario and then confirming their suspicions a few days later.

Phillyist learned how to put on a puppet show – it's not as easy as you might think!

Shanghaiist discovers that the average starting monthly pay for fresh graduates in China has risen to 1,798 Yuan (or US$251).

SFist welcomed in the year of the rat via San Francisco's annual Chinese New Year Parade.

Bostonist was stunned this week by the news that the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has been cutting bus and train rides from their schedule to save money. Only they neglected to tell passengers about it.

Chicagoist covered last week's Obama and McCain wins.

Gothamist was thrilled to hear that a kitten lost at a subway station was rescued after 25 days underground (a transit worker found her after he started to meow!). Georgia the cat was dehydrated and suffered a fractured leg but is, overall, in good condition.

Much to the surprise of everyone at Londonist, apparently London airports are so amazing, police action was required to remove one man from Gatwick.

LAist asked the question, why does everyone hate hipsters?

Austinist reported live from the Democratic Presidential debate.

Phillyist explored an impending implosion and lived to tell the tale.

Gothamist marveled at the city's new NYC-branded condom campaign - especially the use of a Toronto landmark in the advertising. (Also, fun fact: Gothamist turned five years old yesterday.)

Tired of the worldwide Scientology protests? Torontoist totally isn't: they covered the big downtown protest the day it happened, and followed up with an examination of all of the protests' legality, according to hate crime laws, a few days later.

LAist also got into the fray outside the "Anonymous" Scientology protests, netting a killer photo essay and some on-site video of the vociferous crew in their masks.

And would you look at that: SFist covered last Sunday's thetan hatefest too.

According to Seattlest, area travel author Rick Steves and the Washington state ACLU want to talk to you about legalizing pot.

DCist took a good look at the results of the "Potomac Primary" and put together an interactive map that shows the breakdown of exactly why Washington, D.C. is Obama Country.

Speaking of which, Austinist reported on Mayor Will Wynn (heh) endorsing Barack Obama.

Chicagoist continues to be obsessed with all odd Obama accessories,
like these
fly one-of-a-kind, hand-painted kicks.

And in non-Obama/Scientology-free news, Bostonist met with one of the wine world's biggest renegades, Gary Vaynerchuk, host of the Wine Library TV podcast.

Toronto has been experiencing a ton of snow lately, so

Thanks.">
The Chicago Tribune is, in 2008, finally getting around to dealing with the glorious, frustrating, and all-knowing voice of the commenter. This week the Tribune shut down their comment boards on all of their political news stories. What's more, the publication also yanked the Commenter's voice on a recent op-ed piece about Muslims and another story about Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich. Why? Bill Adee, associate managing editor who also oversees the online operations, "ordered the suspension of comments on politics after he noticed the number of writers unfairly trashing the candidates." But more likely, the Tribune's writers and editors are growing frustrated with seeing their pearls of journalistic wisdom adorn racist, tangential, salacious rants and lies.

Stuff that SFist, and surely our sister site, Chicagoist, adores.

Anyway, we're surprised at this sudden comment thread removal; SFGate has commenters who spew forth entertaining zaniness and sometimes regrettable word choice, comments that the Tribune can't even begin to dream about. Thankfully, the Gate has kept that voice in tact for further debate and our entertainment.

Week Around the -Ists

href="http://londonist.com/2008/01/6_years_on_amne.php">Amnesty International bringing Guantanamo Bay to the American embassy to raise the profile of the continuing campaign to close the detention...

misc

Amnesty International

Austin

Chicagoist

China

Colbert

DCist

Go Fug Yourself

Gothamist

Guantanamo Bay

Houstonist

J.J. He'll be stopping in at the Bottom of the Hill, where he'll play his witty folk/rock consisting of songs off his recent EP, Fewer Moving Parts. The first words off the song "Selling Advertising" asks the music critic, "You're so creative with your reviews/Of what other people do/How satisfying that must be for you." But at the end he tells his listener, "You can always start a band with me." Now we don't think you should bring your guitar or harmonica to the gig on Wednesday night, but come prepared to listen to some creative singer/songwriter magic - he's #85 in Paste's Top 100 living singer/songwriters.
Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market challenge. Wilco also played Millennium Park under a picture perfect late-summer evening. The one-year anniversary of Macy's taking over and re-naming Marshall Field's was marked by protests outside the store. They also took a look at the rotten egg the Bears laid in San Diego. Finally, the story of a Loop panhandler whose dog was stolen was enough to sheath the claws of even the site's most negative readers, if only for a few moments.

Londonist delved into past, present and future. They went back 300 years as they explored the dingy cellars of royal wine merchant Berry Bros and Rudd, then welcomed aged rockers Led Zeppelin and Brian Wilson to town. In the present, they attended a talk by Naomi Klein, author of controversial exposé The Shock Doctrine, and lamented the fact that London is now the most expensive city in the world for eating out. Looking to the future, a team of scientists recommends banning all cars from central London by 2030.

LAist must be doing something right if the Beverly Hills Police Department is serving them with a search warrant after a controversial bicycle post. Even later that week, Denis Leary and Jay Leno went off on how they hate the bicycles on the road (but love motorbikes). Other celeb news included a visit to the red carpet of MTV's VMA Awards, an interview with Carol Channing and the audio of Kathy Griffin telling Jesus to suck it. In non-celebrity news, but equally as important, they caught up with artist Florencia Pita of the Southern California Institute of Architecture and took photos of a girl being hung by hooks in her skin.

Week Around the -ists

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse.
After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked a question sacreligious to many hardcore local fast food chain fans: is Fatburger better than In-N-Out? It is rumored that the burger debate angered so many readers that it led to a 7:00 a.m. bicycle heist, victimizing one of their writers (who the hell lurks around at this godforsaken hour with bolt cutters?). More punishment in Los Angeles came with the arrest of immigration activist Elvira Arellano where it made national headlines, except in local papers where the story was buried. On an ultra local level, they caught up with artist Juan Devis about the Boyle Heights cybermural project.

Bostonist has been enjoying the whimsical, carefree last days of summer by attending one of the city's best festivals, and they're also looking forward to football season. Bridget Moynahan finally had Tom Brady's baby - good news because Brady won't be skipping out on this season's opening game. In others sports news, Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon is looking to end his summer on a high note. He invented a new pitch and christened it with the bold name of "The Slutter." Unfortunately, Papelbon's fellow pitcher, Daisuke Matsuzaka, appears to be ending his summer with a whimper. Meanwhile, the local schools are gearing up. One of greater Boston's more prominent colleges is gloating about how rich they are, while another is suffering yet another embarrassment at the hands of its athletes. Last, but not least, a nearby town stood up to a prominent national institution - and its actions are having a global impact.

The folks at Chicagoist are still cleaning up from the monster storms that hit their area Thursday. Before they donned their waders, however, they found that readers were glad that Elvira Arellano was deported back to Mexico but frustrated that the French are refusing to extradite a suspected murderer back home to stand trial. Lucky for them, there's a new beer company in town, so they can drink their problems away, at least for a while. Just don't bike home inebriated in the wider bike lanes Governor Blagojevich signed into law. Finally, a post about the kid-friendly qualities of a popular brunch spot led to the readers ripping each other to shreds in the comments.

SFist, yet again, dealt with a couple of old items resurrected by new controversy: the Tenderloin Housing Clinic's cam scandal and the evacuation-of-Golden-Gate-Park kerfuffle one month later. "Cult Alert!" flyers warning against YWAM papered downtown San Francisco. Sacramento's NOW chapter admonished a most vile Big Brother 8 houseguest, the fittingly-named Dick. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take her medicine and offered their own suggestions to how the city should capitalize on the local music scene. And everyone thinks that a suggested tax on bottled water is a great idea.

While LAist is prepares for Burning Man's 21st, they celebrated what would have been Charles Bukowski's 87th birthday. Hell, why not celebrate The Dude at Lebowski Fest. Or guys and girls dressed up as Oompa Loompas or sexy 1960's flight attendants playing beach volleyball in a tournament? But the true celebration for Los Angeles will come on the peaceful day when black and brown learn to get down.

This week, SFist found (a presumably pre-AA) Mayor Gavin Newsom looking strikingly similar Sophia Loren. On the downside, the Tenderloin Housing Clinic forced its one-time ally and documentarian to foolishly take down his informative and helpful hallway cam. SFist cover boy Ed Jew came to the defense of local radio nut, Michael Savage; SFPD got cross with some skaters; and the left-hand-inflicted folk finally got their day.

Londonist met some interesting characters this week. First, they spoke to a lady who collects stories about virginity loss. Another Londoner is renting herself out on dates to raise money for brain tumor research. And why was Bill Cinton wearing orange socks with a green tie?

Bostonist welcomed Ron Jeremy to town, but his visit wasn't without incident. A drunk driver nearly took out the porn star's tour bus. Of course everyone wanted a picture with Ron Jeremy - and a cop might be in trouble for posing in uniform. If it's not porn, it'll be sports and politics on the front page. Mitt Romney was mixed in both when it was released that he and his wife have significant investment in YES, the TV network that televises all of the Evil Empire's games. Bostonist issued a warning about peeing on the toilet seat, as such action may have been the background that will send a woman to jail for first-degree murder. And Boston beat out all the other -ist cities in the survey that gave Boston the title of Bloggiest city.

Over at DCist, the news that former Mayor Marion Barry and Michael Jackson have become friends was just too much for them to take, so they spent the rest of the week trying to get over it. While recovering, they wondered why movies set in D.C. never get it right, why Metro won't just outright direct people to stand to the right and walk to the left, why GQ Magazine could possibly think Condoleezza Rice is the most influential person in town, and what's up with that Samuel Gompers Monument.
