A bicyclist was taken to a trauma center Saturday after he allegedly ran a red light and collided with a Muni bus near Laguna Honda Boulevard and Woodside Avenue.
The collision occurred around 2:40 pm Saturday near Forest Hill Station, where a bicyclist was hit by a Muni bus and suffered an injury to the lower leg, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. As the Chronicle reports, multiple callers reported that the bicyclist had run a red light before the crash.
The bicyclist was taken to a trauma center, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said it was reviewing the incident. The crash reportedly happened at the intersection of Laguna Honda Boulevard and Woodside Avenue, where the 52-Excelsior line ends its route with a U-turn near the station.
One commenter on Reddit who said they witnessed the crash described the bicyclist as coming into the bus from the left side, and they said the bus appeared to try to stop before the collision.
The author of the Reddit post described the intersection as particularly confusing and dangerous, with several saying they regularly see drivers and bicyclists run red lights there, particularly northbound traffic.
One person said they had seen drivers use the bus slip lane to continue straight rather than wait for the signal, sometimes at high speeds.
According to the Chronicle, the Fire Department said it was dispatched at 2:41 pm and arrived four minutes later to find the injured bicyclist. Multiple callers reported that part of the bicyclist's lower leg had been run over. The person was treated by first responders before being transported to a trauma center.
The Reddit post includes a photo of the bike crushed under the bus.
“Safety on our streets is our top priority for everyone sharing the road,” SFMTA said in a statement. “We are taking this matter seriously.”
