A 26-year-old Sureño gang member was sentenced Monday to 25 years in state prison after pleading guilty to charges in connection to a 2023 drive-by shooting that injured nine people outside a streetwear shop on 24th and Treat streets.
Javier Campos, 26, pleaded guilty to assault with a semiautomatic firearm and committing violence to benefit his street gang, the Sureños, in connection with a June 2023 drive-by shooting in SF's Mission District, as SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Monday. The incident occurred during a sixth anniversary celebration at Dying Breed, a clothing store located at 24th and Treat streets, and was shocking in its violence.
Nine people were struck by gunfire, with all of the victims surviving. At least one person suffered serious injuries.
The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office charged Campos in December 2023 with discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and causing great bodily injury, eight counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and causing great bodily injury, and three counts of unlawful firearm possession. He was also charged with committing the crimes for the benefit of a criminal street gang and while out on bail in another case.
Prosecutors said Campos admitted, as part of his plea agreement, that the shooting was intended as an attack on a rival Norteño gang.
"This sentence reflects the gravity of Mr. Campos’ crimes and holds him accountable," DA Jenkins said in a statement. "When he opened fire into a public area, he showed a complete disregard for the lives of every person on that street. Senseless gun violence will always be a top priority for my office."
Assistant District Attorney Robert Perkins said Campos’s guilty plea would hold him accountable for the shooting.
Campos, who was 22 at the time of the shooting, was arrested in Santa Cruz five days after it took place. We learned that he had a career as a minor rapper in the local music scene, and he posted multiple music videos like this one to YouTube under the name Boogang J.Baby.
Immediately after the shooting, an Instagram account linked to him posted a link to a song titled "Murder Alley," with the caption, "Imma make sure them n**** neva post up on that block again."
Campos was also wanted by Oakland police in connection with the January 2023 shooting death of 18-year-old Mario Navarro, who was among five people shot during a music video gathering at an East Oakland gas station. That shooting involved gunfire from a vehicle and multiple alleged gunmen.
Campos reportedly grew up partly in Richmond, while his father “had deep roots” in the Mission. Both his father and stepbrother were killed in separate incidents in 2012, and Campos had other outstanding warrants from around the Bay Area.
