A local martial arts instructor was walking his dog at Crissy Field Tuesday afternoon when another man allegedly began attacking him, and the instructor pinned him down until police arrived.
James Hidalgo was at the east beach section of Crissy Field with his dog, Argis, around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday when he says another man approached him and tried to throw a punch. As KRON4 reports, Hidalgo said the man had been shouting loudly nearby, but he initially didn’t think much of it.
KRON4 was reportedly already at Crissy Field filming a different story when the fight broke out. In the video footage, the alleged assailant, who was not identified, appears barefoot and shirtless.
Hidalgo told KRON4 the man accused him of calling him a dog — presumably because Hidalgo was with his dog — before allegedly taking a swing at him, prompting Hidalgo to use his martial arts training to take him to the ground and hold him there.
Witnesses called 911, and Hidalgo reportedly kept the man pinned for several minutes until US Park Police arrived.
“I saw this guy being loud. I didn’t pay no mind. I thought he was trying to get someone’s attention,” Hidalgo said, speaking to KRON4. “I said I don’t know what you’re talking about. Just kind of put my hands up and was like 'Hey man ok' and then he came in and tried to punch me, so then I pinned him down to the ground until the cops got here."
According to the outlet, both men were handcuffed while officers investigated the incident. The alleged assailant was then taken away by police and evaluated by paramedics before being released from custody, according to KRON4. Hidalgo said he plans to press charges.
“He just ran into the wrong person,” said Hidalgo.
The story certainly seems made for TV, with a martial arts instructor finding himself in a beach fight just as a camera crew happened to be at Crissy Field.
It’s unclear what other story the outlet was covering Tuesday afternoon in the area. Prior to the incident, a sick sea lion died at Crissy Field Monday, and a stabbing occurred near the beach Saturday.
