During an investigation into ICE’s violent arrest of Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Gorb at SFO last month, it was discovered that an agent’s gun had been left unattended in a Terminal 2 restroom the day before.

The flight attendant who discovered the firearm found it inside a men’s restroom stall past San Francisco International Airport’s security checkpoint in Terminal 2 on the evening of July 21, as NBC Bay Area reports. The bathroom was shut down while airport security contacted 911, and officers from the San Francisco Police Department arrived within minutes.

The ICE agent reportedly returned to the restroom to retrieve the weapon when SFPD officers were still at the scene. It remains unclear how long the firearm had been left there before the flight attendant found it.

SFO public information officer Doug Yakel said the airport reported the incident to the Transportation Security Administration for possible follow-up. The details came to light through an NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit public records request seeking information about the arrest of Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Gorb at SFO the day before.

Video of that arrest, which was captured and posted online by Richmond City Councilmember Doria Robinson, sparked widespread attention. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Gorb legally entered the US in 2010 but remained after her visa expired by more than 15 years.

Yakel said SFO was aware of three ICE-related arrests at the airport since March, including Gorb’s. Another arrest occurred March 22 and was captured by bystanders, while the third reportedly took place May 1.

According to NBC Bay Area, the airport has sought to distance itself from ICE operations, with Yakel saying SFO is “not involved in decisions about DHS or ICE operations” and does not “assist in immigration enforcement, consistent with Sanctuary City policies.”

ICE has not responded to NBC Bay Area’s questions about the firearm or its presence at SFO that evening.
