The San Francisco Police Department is searching for a suspected thief who used a Waymo robotaxi as his getaway vehicle earlier this year in the city’s first reported case of this kind.
As SFist reported previously, among the many complaints involving Waymo highlighted in CNN’s recent investigation were reports of criminals using Waymo as get-away vehicles. San Francisco experienced its first such reported case back in January when a thief made a getaway in a Waymo vehicle with a large haul of activewear from Hot 8 Yoga in the Marina District, as the Chronicle reports.
The incident occurred in less than three minutes when the suspect reportedly pulled up to the Fillmore Street studio in the robotaxi and left it idling outside while he grabbed the loot. He then jumped back into the Waymo and disappeared.
Investigators have reportedly been unable to locate the suspect, as a warrant to search the vehicle wasn’t filed until April, and the company had not retained the footage from its interior cameras by that point, according to the Chronicle. The car’s external cameras reportedly didn’t capture anything noteworthy, as the faces were blurred for privacy.
Additionally, the account and credit card the suspect used to book the reservation were also reportedly a dead end.
In Los Angeles last year, a less successful thief tried to flee in a Waymo after allegedly robbing a grocery store, but police officers were already on the scene and got the robotaxi to pull over.
