The first homicide of the new year happened in the Tenderloin, just blocks from two other homicides in December.
Early Sunday morning, a homicide occurred near the intersection of O’Farrell and Larkin streets. A 32-year-old woman was shot at 3:51 a.m., and died after being taken to the hospital. As KPIX reports, the victim has been identified as Emma Hunt of San Francisco. No further information has been released about the shooting.
The Mercury News notes that Sunday's shooting was within three blocks of two other shootings that occurred in the final two weeks of the year — Ronisha Cook on December 19, and Jorge Marez-Hernandez on December 24.
Along with the death of 89-year-old Yik Oi Huang on Friday, now ruled a homicide following a beating nearly a year prior, the homicide count for SF stands at two for 2020. In all of 2019, there were 41 homicides, or just over three per month — marking a 56-year-low for this grim statistic. Given that we now already have two on the books just six days into the year, it doesn't bode well for 2020.
*This post has been corrected after erroneously including another Tenderloin homicide that had actually occurred in 2019.
