An 89-year-old great-grandmother succumbed to her injuries Friday after a year in the hospital following a January 2019 beating in a park near her home in Visitacion Valley.

Yik Oi Huang, also known as Huang Popo, died Friday, and as KRON 4 reports, her family is saying that they want her to be remembered for the "love that she [had] for everyone." The 89-year-old had suffered brutal injuries in the beating, which occurred while she was exercising at the Visitacion Valley Playground last January. As family members write in a GoFundMe post, "She suffered through the massive pain and had been clinging for her life courageously."

Huang had spent much of the last year at Laguna Honda Hospital after suffering facial and brain injuries, and a skull fracture, as KPIX reports.

Huang's suspected attacker, 19-year-old Keonte Gathron, is expected to appear in court Monday, as the Examiner reports. He has been awaiting trial since his February 2019 arrest, and the charges against him may be upgraded to murder following Huang's death.

An event was previously planned, prior to Huang's passing, on the morning of January 8, to mark the one-year anniversary of the beating. Called the Healing through Compassion and Solidarity Silent Sit-In, that will still occur on Wednesday from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Visitacion Valley Playground at 325 Leland Avenue.
