The Bayview homicide we reported about on June 4th turns out to have been a case of vigilante justice. A couple, Barry Gilton, 38, and his longtime girlfriend, Lupe Mercado, 37, tracked a 22-year-old man to southern California and back after they believed he had been pimping out their 17-year-old daughter. After allegedly shooting and injuring him once in North Hollywood in recent weeks, the couple heard he was back in the Bay Area trying to retrieve his ho. And this time they shot to kill.
The victim was 22-year-old Calvin Sneed, of Compton. The daughter had allegedly run away to Los Angeles, and was recently back at home in the Bayview with her parents.
District attorney George Gascon says that Mercado called her boyfriend at 1:57 a.m. on June 4, and that less than five minutes later, Gilton "drove a Mercedes SUV alongside Sneed's Toyota Camry at 2:01 a.m. and fired three shots with a 40-caliber weapon." Sneed got shot in the head, and died shortly thereafter.
The couple's attorneys say they had already tried legal means to try to get their daughter back, but had failed. Though not married, the couple has been together since childhood, and have three children together, including the unnamed 17-year-old.
