As part of an attempt to document the "danger and dysfunction on the city's car-centric streets", local bicycle and alternative transit site Streetsblog would like you, San Francisco's put-upon bicycle/bipedal class, to help document egregious cases of bad driving, bike lane abuse and Muni mishaps. What exactly are they looking for from the citizen whistleblowers? "Any picture or video that conveys the need for change," such as:
- Cars blocking crosswalks, sidewalks, and dedicated lanes for buses and bikes
- Drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Video that captures the routine delays on Muni, like vehicle breakdowns, car congestion, excessive stops, and long dwell times
So there you go, velo vigilantes. Get out there and start shooting. Only you can prevent annoying sidewalk-parkers.
(Important to note here that Streetsblog's effort isn't the first time this has been done: MyBikeLane.com serves a similar purpose of calling out bike lane blockers, although it doesn't seem to have the biggest audience. Its last submission was posted way back in October 2011. Surely, some driver has offended a cyclist with a cameraphone more recently than that.)
Update: SFist commenter Murphstahoe points us to the San Francisco Department of Sidewalk Parking, a blog entirely dedicated to those who decide to park on the sidewalk.
