The photo at left shows Sutro Tower below a meteor that caused the crowd at Twin peaks to gasp just before midnight. We saw about ten meteors ourselves in the very favourable conditions.
You can try to view them yourself over the next few days as the shower loses strength. Follow the steps ably outlined here by David Perlman. You don't need to go all the way to North Korea to escape light pollution of course. A short trip might suffice.
After the comet of January and last night's shower, we'll be eagerly awaiting seeing the moon turn red during its total eclipse on August 28.
