Oprah posed a question—what can you do to help families in your own community?—and Lisa didn’t just hear it. She answered it.

The next week, over a glass of wine with her friend Rachel Fudge, Lisa came up with an idea that would soon grow into a full-blown nonprofit operation. They decided to organize a Mother’s Day diaper drive. The concept was simple, but radical—help new moms with the one thing no one was talking about: diapers. Within weeks, they had collected 15,000. Within months, they’d uncovered a national policy gap when they learned diapers weren’t covered by WIC or food stamps. And within a few years, they were changing state policy.

Fifteen years later, Lisa’s organization, Help a Mother Out, has distributed more than 66 million diapers across California, developed a first-of-its-kind citywide diaper bank in San Francisco, and helped spark public funding models adopted by other states. But for Lisa, it’s not about the numbers—it’s about the mom who didn’t have to dilute her baby’s bottles to ration diapers. The one who didn’t get arrested for shoplifting diapers, and the one who could finally exhale.

A daughter of Vietnamese immigrants and a longtime nonprofit ops pro who once dreamed of being a documentary filmmaker, Lisa is driven by enduring compassion and a firm belief in community. “We are so interconnected,” she says of the Bay Area. “If we can strengthen our most vulnerable, we make the whole region stronger. It’s about lifting each other up, not just handing out help.”

In 1994, Rudy Corpuz Jr. walked out of prison and into a job at Balboa High School, where he was tasked with helping prevent student violence. A Filipino American raised in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, Corpuz had firsthand experience with the kind of gang activity he was now being asked to address. Instead of dictating change, he asked the students what they needed to stay out of trouble. Their answers—basketball, flag football, talent shows—became the foundation for United Playaz, a youth violence prevention program that continues to grow three decades later.

United Playaz has since expanded across the city and beyond, with a clubhouse in SoMa that serves hundreds of youth each year. Many of its early participants now have children in the program. The group also runs a gun buyback initiative in partnership with the Mayor’s Office, which has collected over 3,000 firearms since 2014.

In 2023, Corpuz opened a SoMa cannabis dispensary through the Stiiizy franchise, with profits earmarked for gun buybacks and family support services. A longtime advocate for legalization, he sees this as another avenue to serve the same community he once harmed.

His transformation—from a self-described “destroyer” to a mentor and community leader—is deeply rooted in a commitment to restorative justice. The quote painted on his dispensary wall sums it up best: “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

Over six years, Alameda resident Chris Thoms completed an incredible challenge: running every street in Alameda County — all 16,218 of them across 20 cities. What began as a personal exploration of his new neighborhood turned into a county-wide mission after he discovered CityStrides, a tracking app that gamifies street completion and helped fuel his obsession.

Starting in February 2019, Thoms ran five to six days a week, averaging 6–10 miles on weekdays and longer runs on Sundays. He expanded his routes to Menlo Park and Kensington, ultimately completing 7,118 miles over 1,087 runs and more than 1,100 hours on foot. He wrapped up his journey with a 37-mile run on May 10, 2025, finishing on Bear Creek Drive in Livermore with his children by his side.

Along the way, he encountered a wide variety of terrain, from suburban streets to rural stretches with cows, dogs, peacocks, and pigs. His quest not only brought personal fulfillment but also served as a fundraiser for the Alameda County Community Food Bank. Thoms pledged 10 cents per street, personally matched 2-to-1, and ultimately helped raise over $5,000 to fight food insecurity in the region.

Currently ranked #25 globally on CityStrides, Thoms sees this project as part of a bigger athletic dream: to one day qualify for the Boston Marathon, inspired by a childhood memory watching runners race past Fenway Park.

Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the reward: “During it might be hard, but you don’t regret it at the end.”

Image via Help a Mother Out on Facebook

Previously: Notable Humans: Record-Breaking Bay FC Women’s Soccer Star Empowers Zambian Youth

Photo Du Jour: Just Play It Cool, Boy

"Suss" by Bhautik Joshi.

Arts & Entertainment

people

photo du jour

Brock Keeling

Users stopped talking about Twitter on Twitter. Just as the mirror couldn't care less what you think of its reflective qualities, no one cared to hear how amazed you were with writing 140 characters or fewer. People finally started using Twitter for its intended purpose.

Like a recessionista article come to life in gastronomic form, San Francisco navel gazers soiled themselves silly over food from an automobile or cart. The trucker baseball cap didn't die; it transformed into Mission Street Food.

While Gavin wasn't able to make it all the way to Sacramento (not yet, anyway), he had a banner year: his wife, Jennifer Siebel, pooped out a beautiful baby girl, he got a great seat at the inauguration, and he returned to being our icy yet affable mayor. After all was said and done --- the talk of life coaches, trips to Hawaii, finger wagging at CBS 5's Hank Plante -- it was nice to have him back.

For better or for worse, Oscar Grant, who was killed on New Year's Day at the Fruitvale Bart station, became a household name.

Graduate school journalism students and authentico journos scribbled on the world wide web, complete with people-on-the-internet-are-mean posts and other aggressively thoughtful nuggets. Sure, most of them still don't know what a "meme" is -- inexplicably, everyone from local bloggers to local politicians considered themselves a meme in 2009 -- but they did learn the magic of hyperlinking. Finally.

Check out the anti-gay truck motoring around town today. Isn't it adorable? Fortunately for it, it lacks any "anti-oak tree" or "pro-Marine recruitment" signage, which would've really pissed off locals Bay Area do-gooders.

Surprisingly, these anti-gay marriage folks are probably going to win regarding the state's decision as to who is and who isn't <del>a human being</del> allowed to marry. Why is this debate still going on? It's a waste of time, money, energy, and brain cells. Annoying.

Anyway, for more images of the anti-queer action gong on around town to say, follow the jump. And, please, we request you refrain from labeling the anti-gay marriage protesters as closet cases. People who are struggling with their sexual orientation deserve better. And we never fully understood that clumsy argument, which akin to saying that, say, the Klan or neo-Nazi skinheads are secretly black or Jewish. Some people are just hateful, period.

WonderCon Film Panel in Review

By Gordon Elgart (based on his Twitter entries)

Arts & Entertainment

Anne Hathaway

David

David Duchovny

film

Get Smart

Gillian Anderson

media

people

Roland Emmerich

Steve Carell

wondercon

Brock Keeling

By Gordon Elgart (based on his Twitter entries)

Every year, we spend Saturday at WonderCon in Hall A, watching panels of filmmakers and actors prattle on about upcoming films, and show exclusive clips and trailers. This year, we kept a running diary. Ahem:

11:12 AM – We’re in a gigantic line for WonderCon. In the pre-registration line, which is significantly longer than the pay-at-the-door line. So glad we paid in advance.

11:35 AM – Hall A is super packed. People are holding entire rows. We did manage to get an acceptable place to sit, not too far from the panel, and with a good view of the screen.

12:00 – The 10,000 BC panel is starting. We’ve got director Roland Emmerich along with two actors we’ve never heard of. One guy, one girl. They’re both very pretty.

12:16 PM – Roland Emmerich is funnier than expected. No one seems to care about the cast.

12:30 PM – The Get Smart panel. The director is here, along with stars Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway. Now, these are movie stars.

12:45 PM – Every question so far has been for Steve Carell. He is, as expected, hilarious.

12:46 PM – Finally, the first question for Anne Hathaway: What’s it like working with Steve?

12:54 PM – Anne Hathaway comes across as really smart. She either is, or she’s really good at acting it.

SFist Finds: Happy Val'z Day!

SFist reader Mai sent us this precious find that she found last Friday at 22nd and...

misc

Bay Area

ese

Flickr

found

note

people

USA

valentines day

valz-day

Leanne Maxwell

Sappenin' sammy!

Don't be fooled by the juvenile hand-writing or Crayola markers on the cover of this album. This is anything but juvenile. Each song Sia creates an emotional journey - sometimes literal, sometimes metaphorically - where she discovers something very important. The life-saving "Little Black Sandals" lets us see her struggle on starting a new life. She sings, "These little black sandals/Are walking me away/These little black sandals/Saved my life today." Sia travels back and forth between hopeful optimism and deep emotional betrayal. The heartfelt pleas in "The Girl" seem a bit shallow until you realize that the song is really called "The Girl [You Lost to Cocaine]." "No I don't need drama, so I'm walking away/Yeah I am a girl with a lot on her plate." Yikes.

In "You Have Been Loved" her lover walks away and she is left behind feeling empty: "Only sadness remains/And it will pass." This album ends up being emotionally-charged without being superficial and meaningless yet somehow it still remains upbeat. If you missed her last show at the Fillmore, it's okay, she's back in February (the 18th to be exact). Get your tickets now; it was nearly sold-out last time.

1. Sia, Some People Have Real Problems - (Monkey Puzzle Records/Hear Music) 1/8 - Only because we already have the CD and it's everything that we wanted it to be and much, much more. You can see Sia at the Fillmore on 2/18. She's a dynamic performer, plus she's super funny.

2. Madonna - title TBA, May- It's Madonna; we are always up for some new Madonna. Apparently Justin Timberlake collaborated with her on this effort. But he won't say a word about anything; he's afraid for his life.

3. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (XL), 1/29- Yes, most of this is being "re-released" but this time it's official. There's various releases on the internet - it seems that the band has released several different versions of their songs. So if you haven't found it on the Internets yet, then wait for the official release. It's worth it.

4. Death Cab For Cutie - title TBA (Atlantic), May- Death Cab for Cutie is one of our favorites. Plans got mixed reviews but we are being optimistic and hoping for something better. They are being rather tight-lipped about their upcoming release. You can watch this video to get a tiny idea of what it's about but if you get bored with that, then head over to their newly designed website. Pretty slick.

5. Kate Nash - Made of Bricks (Fiction), 1/8- We love this British songwriter to pieces. Singing about her trainers and shitty boyfriend in her new single, "Foundations" she instantly becomes witty, sarcastic and purely delightful. She's playing popscene on 1/12 and we've already got our tickets. Check out the remixed version of "Caroline's a Victim."

A fantastic flick, really. It's gorgeous, laced with a few Bay Area inside jokes, oddly nerve-wrecking to watch, and the ending is perfect. Brilliant. In every way.

And, yes, while many would (with much vulgarity) argue we're seeing the film through rose colored glasses, for lack of a better term, we disagree with the zingers written about Coppola's movie upon its release. No, it does NOT look like Paris Hilton made the thing. Strip away your Embarcadero Theatre arrogance and your obsessive need for a plot - we suggest the awesome straight-male campfest that is The Sopranos for decent, plot-heavy entertainment - and see for yourself.

Marin's very own Hollywood transplant power couple, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn, are getting a d-i-v-o-r-c-e. At least according to People Magazine they are.

The couple, chained together in varying levels of wedding bliss for over 11 years, have two children. The two appeared together in two flicks: the film adaptation of Hurlyburly and Nick Cassavetes' She's So Lovely. (We love the latter. A lot.) And if independent cinema and a kick-ass view of the Bay can't hold a relationship together, what can? Sigh.

But on the brighter side of a disheartening situation: Sean is back on the market, ladies. (And he's probably sensitive right now, so leave him alone, hot young Republicans of the Bay Area! We mean it.) Although we can't imagine him kicking it at some Sausalito wine bar, listing to a smooth jazz outfit or Fleetwood Mac cover band, we hear he likes the scene over at Tosca.

Anyone else know where Penn likes to lounge? Just where, exactly, in SF do the indie elite meet?
