Why couldn't Newsom tell CBS 5's Hank Plante, "Yeah, I took off to Hawaii. And what, hooker? Somebody hold my earrings."
Instead, after failing to turn a recent sit-down interview to the city's budget -- because, really, who wants to hear about something so crucial yet boring? -- Newsom got cranky. Because Plante insisted that our mayor tell us where he's been and what he's been doing over the last two weeks.
"Working my tail off," said Newsom.
The mayor, it seems, has been trying to fix the budget, dealing with a new daughter, attending "69 public events last week," and other assorted duties that weren't made public.
When asked about the media coverage of his so-called temper tantrum, Newsom fibs he doesn't read the press, doesn't read the Chronicle. Why? Because he's too busy getting stuff done.
Newsom then slammed Plante as "factually incorrect," accusing him of misleading his audience.
But then, when Plante brought up the budget toward the end of the interview, Newsom turned pissy. Which, of course, was brilliant. (He needs to do this more often. And frown; he needs to learn how to frown when he's upset. We couldn't find a screen grab of him appearing visibly upset, which is chilling.) After the interview ends and he takes off his microphone, the mayor spits back, "Off the record, I'm amazingly disappointed. Amazingly. I just am, personally, you know."
OK then. Well, glad to have you back, Gavin.

Newsom fought for Plante's right to marry and this is how he's treated in return? Typical SF excuse for journalism. Feel free to shoot Hank a text and let him know how you feel: (415) 765-8633
What are you talking about? Newsom just threw the idea of same-sex marriage out there and then ran away as soon as things got tough.
But he certainly didn't "fight" for anything. He's a total coward.
Agreed. The initial comment is silly. Hank's doing a good job. Newsom's not.
All of a sudden, the job got hard and there's not another position on the horizon.
Blaming the press is a sign of implosion. Newsom really needs to buck up answer all the very fair questions, and get to work before it's too late, if it isn't already.
Treated? How do journos usually treat politicians? Not well, if they're doing their job. Oh, hold on. I take that back. I think that Hank should have given Newsom the most soft-ball interview in the world, praised him to the ends of the earth, and then thanked him, on camera, for all the "progress" Newsom has enabled on the gay rights front. Momentary lapse of reason on my part earlier, please accept my deepest apologies and pass my sincere thanks to King Newsom for everything he's ever done for us plebs and tell him I hope he gets to disappear to Hawaii again soon.
Gay people owe Gavin NOTHING. Not a damn thing. The fact of the matter is that we were moving along at quite a steady pace with marriage equality in Massachusetts. It was already happening. What Gavin did was strategic and self serving. He had everything to gain from it. it was a sly strategic chess move that brought enough of the progressive base over to his side. On some level it was the right thing to do, but make no mistake, he would not have done it if it didn't serve his interests completely.
Structural homophobia is not the fault of gay people. We deserve to live in an equitable society and shouldn't be asked to overlook the dishonesty, incompetence and ethical lapses of our leaders just cause they threw us a bone. We shoulda had the whole damn steak in the first place.
No, no, Zirpoli's right. Gay people aren't allowed to criticize Gavin Newsom, EVER. Sorry, that may seem strange, bigoted, irrational, an affront to the tradition of the press, and insulting to both Newsom and Plante, but some things just are what they are.

I'm beginning to feel as if the media needs to get over Newsom's silence. The same articles, ideas and comments are beginning to repeat themselves; it's getting old. The fact is, he's attempting to portray himself as a mayor once again, not a gubernatorial candidate. Let the man do so, and press him on the issues, not the recovery of his ego.
i don't really care about his silence, i care about his results. i don't really see a lot of results that affect me (or the crap i care about) coming from his appearance at 69 public events last week. i mean really, is that really something he should be bragging about? he's still just gladhanding.
and plus, gavin is just really thin-skinned. i don't see any way around that one. he is extremely immature and just refuses to talk to anybody that has a good reason for not liking the job he's doing.
I thought people hated it when Newsom had press/public events? "Empty suit"... "playing up the press"... Make up your mind!
Newsom seems to be on the edge of a nervous breakdown. I'm actually really starting to feel sorry for the guy....except that he can end it any time by resigning.
Sounds like people hate healthy sf. People hate care not cash. People hate carless sundays. People hate removing cars on market. People hate George Gascón. People hate the push for gay marriage (which made him a dem outsider in 04, yet look at all of the talk of it in 08).
72% of you voted for him in 2007. So what's up? Did you lose your job this year? Is that his fault? Were you mugged this year? Tell me your story. Are there more homeless now? Is this Gavin's fault? Has muni changed? Is this related to the economy? Did he cause the hipster phenomenon?
I know one person who's on Healthy SF and she loves it. I don't mind paying a buck or two more at a restaurant, big deal.
I thought the Car-free Sundays thing went over well.
And who hates George Gascon? I thought the general consensus was either too early to tell or so far, so good.
I like carless Sundays, I was in favor of trying out carless Market, I haven't decided yet how I feel about Gascon (need more time to judge), I like Healthy SF, I love that he pushed for gay marriage... and I STILL feel like he needs to get over himself and grow up and just deal with the press openly and maturely.
He's acting like a spoiled child, and not only is it unfair to the public, he's not doing himself any favors either. Why should the press treat him any differently than anyone else? We have a right to hear what's up with him. He WORKS for us after all.
and yeah, he got a huge percentage of the vote in 2007: because he ran UNOPPOSED for all intents and purposes. And even so, does the fact that I voted for him 2 years ago mean I'm not allowed to criticize anything he does afterward? I don't get why people say, well you voted for him/her/it, you must've liked them, what are you complaining for now? Newsflash: things change as the years pass.
that was supposed to be in reply to the comment by thisis.
holly: ok to criticize, some people are suggesting he resign. Doesn't make sense to me, I'm sure not to you either, right?
Healthy SF had jack shit to do with Newsom. Just because he took credit for it doesn't mean he had anything to do with it.
"Healthy SF had jack shit to do with Newsom. Just because he took credit for it doesn't mean he had anything to do with it."
Ok, that's fine. So you are suggesting a mayor is only good and should keep his job if he ONLY comes up with his ideas, and not push for other people's ideas. How much of a percentage is allowed to assist him? Once he has 25% help, he is a bad mayor and should step down? I know at your job YOU DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF, and come up with your own ideas, we are all very impressed, really. But maybe public policy is a little different than your job, and we shouldn't base it on it?
Is this your big complaint? You know that he doesn't have his own ideas?
Nobody is going to bother arguing with your semi-lucid rants, so you can go back to your crack-smoking.
"do you know how many people worked on those ideas before newsom signed on to them? the least he could do after getting credit for people's hard work is be accountable to them."
I'm wondering if this is similar to other administrations. Apparently not, since everyone is so upset. I'm fine with that, really I am, I am just trying to figure out why everyone hates him. I am happy with the things I listed above.
Why is everyone so upset? For not apologizing? For abandoning the city? If everyone needs me to, I can submit an hour by hour synopsis of my life when he left to show how I was affected.
i'm proud to say i fall in the group that didn't vote to reelect him, but in case you forgot he was an incumbent running against small names.
do you know how many people worked on those ideas before newsom signed on to them? the least he could do after getting credit for people's hard work is be accountable to them.
in a time of economic crisis he abandoned the city to run for governor, it didn't work out. he should hold a press conference, say he's sorry and move on. tell us he is ready to work with the supes to fix the budget and start making good things happen. own up and move on.
I turned to the person I was watching the interview with and asked:
"If everything this journalist was implying was factually true, would that excuse his behavior?"
She said it would. She's apolitical.
I'm not. I felt the piece leaped across the line into editorializing.
Gavin's a douche, but I agreed with his assessment of Plante's journalism.
Even if Newsom did have a whiff of "Seriously, Man ... You And Me, We're Done Professionally.”
There can't be any argument about the following statement.
Gavin Newsom is a NUTCASE!
When did Gavin Newsom turn all Sarah Palin? All I hear from him these days is "gotcha journalism" and whining about how the press is against him. Grow a pair and maybe do something about the rash of violence on Muni. Then maybe I'll support you again.
because he doesn't want to answer any questions, he thinks every question is a gotcha.
Q: "so mr. mayor, how's the plan to get cars off market st. going?"
A: "nice, don't you have anything else besides gotcha questions? thanks for your time."
srsly, watch the gavin video chris daly posted the other day.
Gavin's not doing his job. He's goofing off and acting like a bratty little kid. He didn't create healthySF, Tom Ammiano did. He has destroyed Muni, and he doesn't care about doing his job anymore. The fact that Chris Daly is looking like the mature, rational, even smarter politician is saying a lot!
GoGavinNewsom.com . Pretty boy can't handle criticism, and thinks the press should be his personal PR machine. Whatever, Mayor lightweight.
"The fact that Chris Daly is looking like the mature, rational, even smarter politician is saying a lot!"
Amen to that.
As much as Daly annoys me, I have to third that one.
I agree with Greg. I don't necessarily want him to resign; I just want him to do his job. And if he wants us to believe he's doing his job, he's going to have to answer these uncomfortable questions about why he hasn't been showing up at things that he committed to. When he is asked what he is doing, he needs to be more specific than, "working hard."
If I took off to Hawaii and missed work without prior notice, I would expect my boss to ask me about it. If I bagged on work related events that I had previously said I would attend, I would expect my boss to admonish me. And if my boss had the perception that I hadn't been doing my job, I would damn sure want to be able to say something more than, "Am too! Leave me alone!" without any actual backup, if I am expecting to keep that job.
Gavin has given the public the perception that he does not take his job seriously. It is now on him to prove that this perception is wrong. the way public figures get their message out to the public is through the press. He can't just refuse to answer the media's questions and expect us all to take his word for all the awesome stuff he's supposedly getting done.
Gavin has handled this whole matter in a completely unprofessionally manner. The harsh interview he received from Plante was deserved.
I sent a package with some pampers and a rattle to City Hall last week addressed to Gavin, for his personal use.
His two month old probably whines less than he does.
pics or it didn't happen
gav certainly got owned in the interview...damn shame he couldn't have said something as simple as 'I had to go recharge my batteries and be with my family for a little bit, but now i'm back and up to my ass in this f'd up budget'
ah well...waiting for pt 2
No kidding, why didn't he just say that?
These are the things that make me think he's on the edge of a break down.
seriously.
Was Newsom doing a 69 at each of the 69 public events that he appeared at? Also, holy fuck -- I didn't know he had a tail. Is it scaly like a lizard's, curly like a pig's, or thin and slithery like a rat's? Since it's off now, can I have it? I want to put it in my little shiny trinket box that I hide under my bed for safekeeping.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOLBQxk72NY
I saw a preview of Part II and it isn't pretty. Gavin crawls out of the chair and onto the floor where he curls up into the fetal position and begins mumbling something incoherent.
2:39 "I was at three events at the exact same time."
Turn off the sound and watch for the cues. Notice the opening. He plops into that big chair, sulks back into it and his shoulders drop. No eye contact with the interviewer, no smile, no nothing. He's on meds and the electricity has officially been turned off.
