The Year in Albums: Looking Forward to 2008

Because we love us some music lists and just featured our staff's favorite songs and albums of 2007, we thought it would be nifty to feature up-and-coming efforts of '08.
A few of our favorite seasoned artists will release new works, along with new talent on the horizon that we're impatiently anticipating (even some local bands!), so check them out:
1. Sia, Some People Have Real Problems - (Monkey Puzzle Records/Hear Music) 1/8 - Only because we already have the CD and it's everything that we wanted it to be and much, much more. You can see Sia at the Fillmore on 2/18. She's a dynamic performer, plus she's super funny.
2. Madonna - title TBA, May- It's Madonna; we are always up for some new Madonna. Apparently Justin Timberlake collaborated with her on this effort. But he won't say a word about anything; he's afraid for his life.
3. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (XL), 1/29- Yes, most of this is being "re-released" but this time it's official. There's various releases on the internet - it seems that the band has released several different versions of their songs. So if you haven't found it on the Internets yet, then wait for the official release. It's worth it.
4. Death Cab For Cutie - title TBA (Atlantic), May- Death Cab for Cutie is one of our favorites. Plans got mixed reviews but we are being optimistic and hoping for something better. They are being rather tight-lipped about their upcoming release. You can watch this video to get a tiny idea of what it's about but if you get bored with that, then head over to their newly designed website. Pretty slick.
5. Kate Nash - Made of Bricks (Fiction), 1/8- We love this British songwriter to pieces. Singing about her trainers and shitty boyfriend in her new single, "Foundations" she instantly becomes witty, sarcastic and purely delightful. She's playing popscene on 1/12 and we've already got our tickets. Check out the remixed version of "Caroline's a Victim."

6. Playradioplay! - title TBA, - We featured the EP on New Tunes Tuesday and looking forward to a full-length release. At 18, what else does he got going on? The answer: building LEGOs. He is going to take a break from touring and build Ultimate Collector's Edition Millennium Falcon LEGO Set. Yep, starting January 6th, 2008 at 12pm. Whatever, the music's good.
7. Panic! At The Disco - You Don't Have To Worry... (Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance), 3/11- We almost forgot about them. Almost. Their debut release, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out, was awesome until it was over-played and we couldn't get those stupid lyrics out of our head: "What a beautiful wedding...what a shame the poor grooms' bride is a whore." Each day, the website (which is presently a painful white and black puzzle) gets updated with new tidbits and information. However, right now it only has two audio samples of Brendon singing: "Oohh, it's been so long/We're so sorry we've been gone."
8. Coldplay - title TBA - It's been two years. Wow, two years since their last release. We guess, it's time for this year's nine-track release. "Clocks" is still one of my all-time favorites songs. Hopefully they've come up with something better. We doubt it, though Chris Martin has declared he has written, "...a quintessential song that everybody should hear 'before we die.'" Don't think you are going to get your hands on it early, "I can't tell you about it, but it's basically genius." He's presumptuous, but we're still interested.
9. Colin Meloy - Skulls, Ship, Sheep (Kill Rock Stars), 4/8- The lead singer of The Decemberists is releasing his solo album. We are pee-your-pants excited about this one - more quirky songs about skulls, ships and sheep. (Whatever works, right?) You can check out Meloy's previous solo work here where he sings six covers of some of Morrissey's greatest.
10. Moby - Last Night (Mute)- He has released record, after record, of great electronic-pop music that is easy on the ears. He's even worked for free. We can't wait to hear what he has electronically come up with now. We're waiting to hear if he takes Radiohead's lead and delivers the record via the internet.
Others that just missed being listed:
*Headlights - Some Racing, Some Stopping (Polyvinyl), 2/19
*Nada Surf - Lucky (Barsuk), 2/5
*The Heavenly States - Delayer (The Rebel Group)
*The Fray - title TBA (Epic)
*of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping (Polyvinyl), October
*R.E.M.
