Somebody got their hands on a fairly beat-up, decommissioned Muni bus, whose "Not In Service" digital sign is at least still functional, and was spotted driving it in Oakland recently.

With the caption "Oakland is like a GTA server," (referring to Grand Theft Auto) the video below surfaced on what appears to be Instagram and then on Reddit this week — posted to the subreddits r/BayArea and r/CrazyFuckingVideos. The driver is shirtless and smoking a cigarette behind a frame where windshield glass used to be, and this appears to be in the area of the former/continuing Wood Street encampment, in West Oakland near the MacArthur Maze.

Redditor deciblast writes in a comment, "That guy lives in the bus and parks in Oakland. I live in the neighborhood and have seen it parked in multiple places. It also has tags on it." The person adds, "He was parked at West Grand and Campbell this weekend on the north side. The he moved to the south side. Then I saw him off 5th near 880 past West Oakland BART on my way to work yesterday."

As the Chronicle notes, the SFMTA takes buses that reach "the end of their useful life" and either auction them off, donate them, or give them to other city departments to be repurposed — like several that were recently retrofitted by the SF Fire Department to serve as rescue vehicles in a mass casualty event.

SFist noted one such bus for sale in Sacramento last year, with an asking price of $8,000 and "only 41,608 miles" on it. This one spotted in Oakland likely went for less than that, given the looks of it.
