Suspect In Muni Stabbing Was Allegedly Harassing Women, Victim Intervened

The suspect in last week's stabbing on board a Muni bus in SoMa has been identified, and he is now charged with attempted murder.

As we reported previously, a man was stabbed in the neck and suffered life-threatening injuries while riding a 14-Mission bus in the area of 10th and Mission streets last Wednesday, September 23, and a suspect was quickly arrested.

Now, via the the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, we have some more details about what took place leading up to the stabbing.

According to investigators, 44-year-old Glenn Hopkins was harassing and/or staring at two women on the bus who then began yelling at him to stop. The victim reportedly board the bus as this was happening, and intervened by stepping between Hopkins and the women.

"Mr. Hopkins continued trying to get past the victim, could not, and ultimately Mr. Hopkins removed a box cutter with the blade exposed and then suddenly and repeatedly swung it at the victim’s neck and throat," the DA's office explains in a release.

The victim suffered serious injuries but was conscious and speaking to EMTs from the SF Fire Department, as seen in some video from the aftermath at the scene. He apparently survived, but we have no update on the extent of the injuries.

The DA's office has now filed charges of attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon, and causing great bodily injury. Hopkins is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon committed against a public transit passenger, and causing great bodily injury.

Hopkins was scheduled to be arraigned Monday at 1:30 pm.
