Dolly Parton brings people together, and that's what happened Friday afternoon in SF's Union Square, where the city celebrated the first ever Dolly Day just as the state of California and other states have established 9/25, appropriately, as Dolly Day.
Hundreds gathered in Union Square Park for the celebration, which was spearheaded in part by Matt "Haze" Kaftor of Gold Digger Records, and organized just in the last three weeks. Parton died on August 25 from cancer complications, after not making her cancer diagnosis public.
The event featured a Dolly shrine that the public was encouraged to add to, a live painting of Dolly, and performances of Dolly songs by local singers and drag queens, including Mae Powell, Vicki Randle, Liz Lewis, Robbie Fitzsimmons, Sunny the Banjo Witch, drag queens Holatta Tymes and Miss Shugana, and tribute band Thee Old Country.
Attendees were also being encouraged to donate to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which you can do here.
