Dolly Parton fans in SF will get a chance to celebrate and mourn the great and wondrous cultural icon that she was at a Union Square concert event later this month.
It's being called Dolly Day, and it's a free event that is happening in Union Square from noon to 3 pm on Friday, September 25, aka 9/25, in honor of her hit song '9 to 5.'
"Come dressed to shine, y'all. Cowboys hats, sparkles, fringe, big hair and all other forms of self-expression are welcome," the event copy says.
"Dolly Day is a celebration of life held in remembrance of Dolly Parton — of her music, her generosity, her endless creativity and the plain joy she handed to everyone who ever heard her sing," the organizers say.
The event is being co-sponsored by Gold Digger Records and event producer MoreSF, and they're promising live performances, tribute acts, DJs, and more, along with food and refreshments.
"Dolly Parton touched so many lives, including the lives of children right here in San Francisco," says Mayor Daniel Lurie in a statement, adding that Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has given away books to 11,000 children in SF who are registered with the non-profit's monthly book giveaway program.
"Dolly spent her life giving joy to people through her music and philanthropy. She is truly one of the most inspiring and universally-loved figures of our time," says Matt "Haze" Kaftor of Gold Digger Records, in a statement. "Dolly Day isn't about mourning. It's about coming together to celebrate everything she gave us, loudly and proudly, the way she'd want it."
As the Chronicle notes, this will be the first official celebration of Dolly Parton Day, which the California state legislature has enshrined on September 25, in SB 931, which is headed to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk for a final sign-off. The bill creates the day of honor in recognition of Parton's contributions to childhood literacy.
