Two young people were arrested last week in San Francisco's Outer Richmond neighborhood after police say they were alerted by Waymo to the presence of an AR-style assault rifle in the vehicle. Both passengers now face charges related to illegal possession of a firearm.
As SFGate reports, the incident took place on September 3 on 40th Avenue shortly before 4 am. The outlet includes commentary from a Waymo spokesperson who confirmed the company alerted emergency services to the situation. SFPD subsequently responded by carrying out a "high-risk vehicle stop."
The youth in question — one male and one female — were booked into San Francisco's Juvenile Justice Center, per SFPD. A police spokesperson also stated that officers recovered "suspected marijuana and mace spray" after conducting a search of the vehicle.
Police are withholding the identities of the suspects as a result of their age but anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to call SFPD.
Earlier this month, as SFist previously reported, Waymo earned undesirable headlines after a father in Noe Valley alleged that one of the company's vehicles had almost run over his two-year-old daughter. The self-driving cars also recently received approval to expand to the entire Bay Area and were also just given the go-ahead to return to SF freeways.
This all comes after a disastrous Fourth of July performance for Waymo that included one vehicle opting to take its passenger down a street full of exploding fireworks. Back in June, SFist covered the first SF case of a suspected thief using a Waymo as a getaway car.
