Witnesses say a woman was dragged in the street by a large unleashed dog in SF’s Tenderloin neighborhood Tuesday morning, and she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The attack happened around 9:20 am Tuesday on the 500 block of Larkin Street, as the Chronicle reports. According to witnesses and video posted to Citizen, the woman was dragged along Larkin Street during the attack, which showed a large, apparently unleashed pit bull mix standing near her as she lay injured with a bloody arm in the roadway.
Several officers can be seen in the footage surrounding the dog, with some appearing to have their weapons drawn, while others kept the animal contained. San Francisco Animal Care and Control reportedly took custody of the dog.
According to the Chronicle, the woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital by San Francisco Fire Department paramedics for treatment. The victim and dog’s owner have not been publicly identified.
Dog bites have been increasing in San Francisco. The Chronicle reported in June that more than 1,020 bites were reported to police in 2025, compared with about 870 in 2024, while more than 430 had already been reported by the end of May this year.
The increase comes as the city’s long-delayed “dog court” reportedly resumed in June under new leadership, with Virginia Donahue, a former director of San Francisco Animal Care and Control, appointed as judge after the court closed in 2024, leaving dozens of cases on hold.
