SF’s South of Market neighborhood will be getting a new grocery store in 2028, as Sprouts Farmers Market is moving into the former Nordstrom Rack at 555 Ninth Street, next door to Trader Joe's.

The Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market is expected to take over the roughly 25,700-square-foot space at Ninth and Bryant streets in 2028, as SFGate reports. The grocery chain specializes in products geared toward a range of dietary preferences, including organic, gluten-free, plant-based, keto, paleo, and non-GM foods. 

“Sprouts looks forward to continuing to expand its footprint in California while bringing a wide assortment of fresh, local and better-for-you products to the community,” Sprouts spokesperson Mychael Ramirez told SFGate.

The new Sprouts will occupy the former Nordstrom Rack spot, which closed in 2021, and The Container Store is currently above it on the second floor. Trader Joe's is also located on the ground floor of the shopping center, with Costco nearby at 10th and Harrison.

KRON4 reported in February that Sprouts had submitted a proposal to the city to expand an existing curb cut to accommodate a trash compactor. Acadia Realty, which owns the shopping center, filed a commercial application with the planning department in May.

Sprouts reportedly opened its first store in Arizona in 2002, and its headquarters are located in Phoenix.

Its first San Francisco location comes as Sprouts has been steadily expanding throughout California, according to SFGate. The company reportedly opened a distribution center in Fullerton in 2023, which CEO Jack Sinclair said would support the chain’s expansion across California and the rest of the country.

The company has also been adding stores around the Bay Area, including locations in Hayward in 2024 and Pittsburg and San Leandro in 2025, and a San Jose location opened in 2023. Sprouts has more than 400 stores across 23 states, including 156 in California.
