• While the Timber Fire in Big Sur keeps burning about 25 miles north, the Plaskett Fire, which began as a 40-acre fire on Wednesday near the small outpost of Plaskett, is now at almost 2,800 acres. The fire grew by 1,000 acres overnight, it is burning in remote terrain, and it has prompted the closure of Highway 1 between Mile Marker 10.2 to one mile south of Old Coast Road at Mile Marker 50.1, due to fire activity.   • A San Leandro man in his 70s, Mike Morgan, died in a house fire, apparently from smoke inhalation, on Wednesday night. His neighbor, a 22-year-old volunteer reservist with the Alameda County Fire Department who grew up next door to Morgan, tried to extinguish the fire with his own gear and a garden hose, but could not pull his friend out in time.
