A new, 40-acre wildfire began Wednesday morning near the Big Sur coast, about 27 miles south of the southernmost section of the still burning Timber Fire.

It's called the Plaskett Fire, and it began around 11 am Wednesday east of Los Burros Road, near the community of Plaskett, as KPIX reports. The fire had grown to 100 acres as of 2:15 pm, and was 0% contained.

An evacuation warning was issued for Plaskett and the area of the Plaskett Creek Campsite, and an evacuation order was issued for a zone to south and east, including a section of coast near Willow Creek Beach and San Martin Rock. The evacuation order is affecting around 30 residents, according to Cal Fire.

This new fire is burning in a different section of Los Padres National Forest that is more than 25 miles south of where the Timber Fire has been burning since August 8.

"Firefighters from various agencies including U.S. Forest Service, CAL FIRE, and local government are aggressively moving ground crews and heavy equipment to the perimeter of the Plaskett Fire in Monterey County to establish containment lines," Cal Fire said in a statement. "Specialized elite Hotshot crews are actively working to gain access to the fire's edge, while eight air tankers have been requested to fly overhead and assist ground personnel with targeted retardant drops."

Air resources are reportedly dropping water on the fire, which is burning "in very difficult terrain that is hard to access," and the fire has been growing at a "moderate" rate of speed, per Cal Fire.

On Wednesday afternoon, Cal Fire reported that eight structures were under threat from the fire. "After initially burning north-northwest, the fire crossed a drainage and is now working up the south side of a mountain following a slope reversal," the agency said.

Meanwhile, the Timber Fire stands at 23% containment, which is actually down from 25% on Monday. The fire has grown by 5,000 acres in two days, to 17,817 acres, burning uphill through the Lion Creek drainage to the north, and to the east near the North and South Forks of the Big Sur River. Hot and dry conditions have contributed to the fire's growth and will continue to, Cal Fire says.

Highway 1 remains open, however traffic controls were in place Wednesday as crews worked to clear rock debris left behind from Timber Fire operations which had piled up by the roadside. This meant periodic traffic holds of 10 to 15 minutes for those driving through the area.
