Oakland police have so far declined to publicly identify the individual suspected of stabbing five people, one fatally, on Monday evening in East Oakland, but police say he is homeless and one or more of his victims was as well.
The stabbing spree began around 7:20 pm in Cesar Chavez Park, near 38th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, and the first victim, who died from his injuries, has been identified by family members as a man who often brought home-cooked meals to the homeless in the park. As KTVU reports, the victim was 58-year-old Gonsalo Lopez, whose family says he recently returned from Honduras and had taken his bicycle over to the park, as he often did.
Disturbing cellphone and surveillance video captured three of the other stabbings, including one that happened moments after the park stabbing at a nearby gas station.
The suspect proceeded to the Fruitvale BART station, where he allegedly found another random victim to stab. And he then walked out onto International Boulevard, where he was seen brutally stabbing a woman walking on the sidewalk, as well as someone riding on the back of a passing scooter.
Bystanders were able to direct arriving police officers toward the suspect, who reportedly dropped his weapon after being ordered to do so, and was peacefully arrested.
The attacks all appear to have been random, which has put local residents and business owners on edge, as the Chronicle reports.
"It’s very unsafe," says Fruitvale area resident Jamar Armstead, speaking to the Chronicle, adding that he was once held up at gunpoint outside his home on 38th Avenue. "There needs to be some changes, and we need to start funding at least more police or more programs," Armstead said.
"There’s too many crimes around this area — robberies and fights," says Mohammed Aldhari, a worker at a nearby market, speaking to the Chronicle.
Presumably when charges are filed in the next day or so, we will learn the identity of the suspect, though it has been withheld so far for unknown reasons.
