A 22-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder in the alleged stabbings of five of his coworkers — none of whom suffered life-threatening injuries — at a restaurant located inside the Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Placer County.
As the Sacramento Bee reports, the stabbings occurred around 7 pm Wednesday at the Dos Coyotes Border Cafe inside the Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln, about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento.
The Placer County Sheriff’s deputies arrived within minutes and arrested Joseph Benedict John Naugle, 22, who also worked at the restaurant. KCRA’s news crew filmed Naugle being taken into custody while still wearing his work apron.
The five victims were employees of the restaurant, and one was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Elise Soviar. The other four were treated at the scene by Thunder Valley Casino EMTs and Cal Fire.
A witness who was inside the casino during the incident shared a photo with KCRA showing first responders tending to the victims inside the casino area amid the slot machines.
The attack occurred in a kitchen area serving Dos Coyotes, which is separated from the restaurant and casino floor, according to the Sheriff’s Office and Thunder Valley representatives. No casino guests or patrons were injured.
Naugle was reportedly booked into South Placer Jail in Roseville on two counts of attempted murder, according to jail records, with additional charges pending. His arraignment in Placer Superior Court is scheduled for Friday.
The restaurant was closed for the remainder of the night, while the casino continued operating normally, per KCRA. Thunder Valley representatives told the Bee that guests at the sprawling resort were likely unaware of the attack as it unfolded.
Soviar said detectives will review surveillance footage from cameras throughout the casino as they investigate how the stabbing happened.
“Our hearts are certainly with the victims who are impacted,” Soviar said, speaking to KCRA. “Even if these injuries are not life-threatening, this is a terrifying situation for them that will definitely have lasting trauma.”
