A 26-year-old man was recently convicted of several charges for violently sexually assaulting a woman last year during a late-night Muni ride after the rest of the passengers had exited the bus.
The attack happened around 11:40 pm on April 26, 2025, aboard the 29-Sunset on Winston Avenue near Stonestown Galleria, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday. As the Chronicle reports, after all the other passengers had exited the bus, Dasan Warsaialem Brown, 26, of San Francisco approached the passenger and asked her for the time before pulling her to the floor and attacking her, according to evidence presented at trial.
Prosecutors said Brown strangled the woman until she was nearly unconscious, removed her clothing, and continued the assault even after the bus driver ordered him to stop and called the police. Brown attempted to rape and sexually penetrate the woman with a foreign object, and the woman suffered injuries including hair loss.
The victim told police she believed she was going to die, per the Chronicle.
San Francisco State University police officers responded and detained Brown until San Francisco police arrived and arrested him.
During the trial, jurors watched surveillance footage from the rear of the bus and heard testimony from the driver, who had worked for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency for eight years.
Brown was convicted of nine charges, including assault with intent to commit a felony, attempted rape by force or violence or threat of bodily injury, attempted sexual penetration by foreign object, sexual battery by restraint, felony false imprisonment, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, simple assault, and two counts of misdemeanor vandalism.
According to the Chronicle, Brown was on court probation at the time after a prior sexual battery conviction in Contra Costa County, prosecutors said. They also alleged that he failed to register as a sex offender after moving to San Francisco.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins thanked the jury and praised the victim for coming forward.
“This verdict reinforces our city’s commitment to holding those who commit acts of sexual violence accountable,” Jenkins said.
Brown remains in custody pending sentencing, which is scheduled for September 3.
