A probably politically motivated act of vandalism has resulted in an arrest in San Jose, after a man seen in a viral video keying a Tesla in a Costco parking lot has been taken into custody.

The incident happened on March 14 between 1 pm and 2 pm at the Costco on Senter Road in San Jose, as KRON4 reported. The video was captured by the car's camera and was shared by the Tesla's owner, and it shows a white-haired, bearded man in a USA jacket getting out of his own car parked next to the white Tesla, looking around, and then keying the side of the car.

San Jose Police were able to make a quick arrest.

"Within less than 24 hours of the viral vandalism incident... we successfully identified, located, and arrested the individual responsible for this act of felony vandalism," San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph said in a Monday statement. "This senseless crime and its subsequent consequences should serve as a clear reminder: no matter one’s personal beliefs or frustrations, they do not justify illegal actions. I urge everyone to respect one another and, above all, to respect the law."

Tesla showrooms and individual Tesla owners have been the targets of protest and anger around the Bay Area and elsewhere in the country in the last month, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk lays waste to multiple government agencies and departments in the interest of trimming spending — but without any apparent methodology, analysis, or transparency.

The national uproar has led some Tesla owners to try to sell their cars, and/or to put bumper stickers on them saying things like "I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy."

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan tweeted about the Costco parking lot incident and the arrest on Monday night, saying, "Keying a car because you don’t like the person who designed it is like breaking a clock because you don’t like the time it shows. If this crime was politically motivated, our residents can’t be held accountable for something Elon Musk is doing 3,000 miles away."

He further thanked the San Jose police for their swift action, and said, "[I] urge us all to voice our opinions where they matter — at the ballot box, not in a parking lot."

The suspect in question has not been publicly identified (but kinda looks like a Trump voter, no?).
