Two people are dead after their car went off a cliff and crashed 300 feet below the roadway along Highway 1 south of Big Sur early Thursday.

The crash reportedly happened around 3:30 a.m., 10 miles south of Big Sur Village, as KPIX reports. Arriving firefighters found the car ablaze and a subsequent brush fire, but they only later reported it as a crash. Initial reports only included one death, but once the fire was under control and the sun had risen, firefighters discovered two burned bodies inside the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro.

Local station KION has photos and video from the crash scene, as well as the heavily burned vehicle being removed from the scene. The station learned from rescuers that authorities don't believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, but it remains under investigation. The two victims have not been identified.

The story follows just six weeks after a car was seen flying off a Highway 1 cliff on dashcam footage near Devil's Slide and Gray Whale Cove. Neither the car nor its inhabitants were recovered, leading some to claim online that the video had been faked — though authorities say it was real, and a second witness also came forward.
