There are still no suspects in a brutal multiple stabbing on May 25 that took the life of 33-year-old Giovanny Alvarez, and the tightly knit community of Bernal Heights, where Alvarez's body was found, is anxious for answers from the SFPD. At a town hall meeting Wednesday, members of Alvarez's family spoke about the fear and grief they're experiencing, and pleaded with any possible witnesses in the community to come forward. As Mission Local reports, the SFPD is increasing foot patrols in the area, and they're asking any neighbors in the vicinity of Bernal Heights Park to review any personal surveillance footage they may have from that morning, last Thursday.

Alvarez's body was found with multiple stab wounds by a hiker in Bernal Heights Park around 5:30 a.m. last Thursday, though it remains unclear whether he was killed there or his body just transported there. Alvarez, a father of four, was a resident of the Bayview but grew up, as Bernalwood discovered, just blocks away from where his body was found, on Moultrie Street in Bernal Heights, and attended Leonard Flynn Elementary School next to Precita Park.

District 9 Supervisor Hillary Ronen and SFPD's Ingleside Captain Joseph McFadden sought to assure the 40 or so attendees at last night's meeting that this appeared to be an isolated incident and that most likely Alvarez knew his killer, though McFadden said he could not release any further information as it could compromise the active homicide investigation.

An unnamed male claiming to have discovered the body contacted Bernalwood the day it was found and called the sight "gruesome," saying it was a "grossly mutilated body with stab wounds."

Catherine Alvarez, the victim's sister, spoke emotionally at the meeting saying, "Even though they say its was a targeted attack, nobody is safe... If you are walking your dog or jogging, whatever it is — for me, we don’t feel safe either. This could happen to anybody, to any of your family members."

But Ronen sought to assuage fears saying, "In talking to the captain, [I found out] that the police do not believe that this was a random incident and have assured me that the Bernal community is safe." She later added, "We looked very carefully at this particular homicide and the other that happened this weekend to make an assessment whether or not it’s safe to go jogging on Bernal Hill in the morning and all of the captains of all of the different stations… have insured me that it is safe for my constituents."

Nonetheless the incident is unsettling for the neighborhood, especially until a suspect is in custody.

CBS 5 quotes one Bernal resident at the meeting saying, "Being safe — those are just words. What are you basing that on? Convince me that we’re safe."

As always, police ask that anyone with information on either homicide contact SFPD's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or Text-A-Tip to TIP411 (847411) and begin the text message with SFPD.
