They're back! Right around this time last year, there were dozens of humpback whale sightings in and around the Bay. While humpbacks tend not to come into the Bay, they were last year for some reason, and many people on boats got some up-close and personal photos and videos of the creatures (myself included).
Just the other week, humpbacks were spotted getting in the way of pods of killer whales on the hunt for gray whale prey in Monterey Bay. It looks like some of their kind have moved up the coast in their annual migration north, and San Francisco Whale Tours snapped the photo above of a humpback breaching on Wednesday, May 10, just outside the Golden Gate.
Also, they shot video, possibly of the same whale, which you can see here via SFGate.
