A SUV belonging to a driver who police say was fatally shot in the head smashed into multiple parked cars and caused a tree to topple before coming to a stop near San Francisco City Hall Wednesday morning.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the male driver of a silver SUV was shot by an unknown suspect near the intersection of Eddy Street and Van Ness Avenue at 2:14 Wednesday morning.

Following the shooting, the victim's vehicle continued to move, striking two parked cars, one of which hit a tree hard enough to topple it, the Chron reports.

When police arrived at the scene of what they initially thought was a simple vehicle collision, they discovered that the driver was dead, and had "head trauma...consistent with [a] gun shot wound," SFPD spokesperson Sargent Michael Andraychak says.

According to the SFPD, the victim was a 34-year-old male. As of publication time, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office had yet to publicly identify him, which they typically decline to do until family members of the deceased have been reached and notified.
