As promised, thousands of San Franciscans marched down Market Street into the Castro and Mission Districts to decry the election of a president who has already brought bigotry and hatred to the forefront of American culture. "Racist, sexist, anti-gay, Donald Trump, go away," crowds chanted as they marched briskly down the city's main thoroughfare, escorted by police who closed sections of the street to traffic.

As Trump and his supporters have mounted perceived attacks on so many communities, his protestors in San Francisco carried signs that called out everything from racism and misogyny to antisemitism. Some took a nihilistic view, others preached hope, and the cheer "Love Trumps Hate," a staple of the Hillary Clinton campaign, was also chanted.

The protest began at 5 p.m. sharp and looks likely to continue for a few hours. In the Castro, it appears the march was loud enough to create a less than contemplative scene at the candlelight vigil being held there. Meanwhile, Oakland is getting down to business with demonstrations of its own.
