The latest fast-food operation from Super Super / Beretta / Starbelly / Uno Dos Tacos owner Adriano Paganini, The Bird, keeps things even simpler than at any of his other restaurants. Using a recipe from consulting chef Blair Warsham, the only real menu item is an organic fried chicken sandwich that comes with a gluten-free, berbere-spiced batter, and it's topped with Super Duper pickles, mayo, and a cabbage-onion-apple slaw. As Inside Scoop reports, you can also get curly fries and beer, but that's it. And the sandwich is $8, and comes in regular or spicy.
The restaurant debuted Wednesday, and for now they're planning only to stay open as long as it takes to sell 200 sandwiches. Starting at 11 a.m., surrounded by the hungry Financial District, that could happen very quickly but that sounds like just an opening-week type of trial.
Interestingly, the same week we're getting the opening of The Bird (which could end up being the first in a chain), another fried chicken sandwich chain debuted nearby. That's The Organic Coup, which opened a second SF location at Kearny and Bush yesterday. The Pleasanton-based chain, which serves salads, wraps, and tater tots as well, opened its first SF location at Rincon Center earlier this year, as Hoodline tells us.
Let the fried chicken sando wars begin.
