The late Chinatown powerhouse Rose Pak, who died last weekend at the age of 68 following a kidney transplant, was laid to rest Saturday following a wake Friday night that drew hundreds of friends and fans. The wake was held at Green Street Mortuary in North Beach, and her funeral happened this morning at Old Saint Mary's Cathedral, with longtime friend Willie Brown delivering the eulogy.
Brown told NBC Bay Area Friday, "She was a lot more than anyone can ever be able to express."
Touchingly, he also told ABC 7, "I still dial her number, and I'm glad it hasn't been turned off."
The wake required overflow seating to be set up outside the mortuary Friday, in the middle of Green Street. Organizers were expecting an even larger turnout for the funeral itself.

Earlier in the week, as the Examiner reported, Mayor Ed Lee spoke of his "deep friendship" with Pak, saying, "She was one of the first people I met when I was as a young attorney, actually a law student, in Chinatown." And, of course, without Pak's influence, Lee would likely not have become mayor.
