Hugh Laurie is set to star in a new drama series for Hulu called Chance, that is about to begin filming in San Francisco. As the Chronicle reports, a flier recently appeared in the Mission from a location scout seeking an apartment building or residence hotel at which to shoot some exteriors, in exchange for a location fee. Shooting is expected to begin in the spring, and the script is based on a two-year-old novel by California writer Kem Nunn centering on a neuropsychiatrist, who'll be played by the former Dr. House, who gets involved with one of his patients, Jaclyn Blackstone — or, rather, as Amazon puts it, "more accurately, her sexier alter-ego, Jackie Black."

Deadline reported back in January on the two-season, 20-episode order for the show, which will be directed in part by Room director Lenny Abrahamson, and written by Alexandra Cunningham, who's best known as the principal writer of Desperate Housewives. Cunningham adapted the novel for television alongside Nunn, and the project has been in the works since the novel was published in 2014.

Per Deadline:

Based on Nunn’s novel, Chance is described as a provocative psychological thriller that focuses on Eldon Chance (Laurie), a San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist who reluctantly gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness. After an ill-advised decision regarding an alluring patient who may or may not be struggling with a multiple personality disorder, Chance finds himself in the crosshairs of her abusive spouse, who also happens to be a ruthless police detective. In over his head, Chance’s decent into the city’s shadowy underbelly, all while navigating the waters of a contentious divorce and the tribulations of his teenage daughter, soon spirals into an ever deepening exploration of one of mankind’s final frontiers — the shadowy, undiscovered country of the human mind.

It appears that a building on Capp Street, or something in vicinity, will become Laurie's character's home.

Per the novel, Dr. Chance has gone through a costly divorce that causes him to begin selling antique furniture, and another character, Big D, the casting of which has not been announced, is "a hulking, unhinged, tattooed, self-proclaimed Iraq war vet turned furniture restorer who becomes buttoned-up Chance’s unlikely friend, mentor, and potential savior."

Also involved will be Jaclyn Blackstone's abusive husband, who's an Oakland homicide detective.

Laurie is currently appearing in the British miniseries The Night Manager, based on the novel by John Le Carré, which will air in the U.S. on AMC starting in April.
