A man found dead in a Tenderloin residence appears to be a victim of San Francisco's 30th recorded homicide for 2015, putting the city on track to hit its highest number of annual homicides in years.

Bay City News reports that police were called to a residence on the 500 block of O'Farrell Street, which is between Leavenworth and Jones, at 10 a.m. Thursday.

When officers arrived, they found a dead 48-year-old man, later identified as SF resident Sheldon Smith. According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Albie Esparza, "medical examiner’s investigators responded and determined the man had died from blunt force trauma and his death was a homicide," BCN reports.

Police have released neither suspect information nor a motive in Smith's death.

Assuming that San Francisco's homicide rate continues at the current average of one slaying every 7.3 days, the city should expect one of its highest murder rates in years: After a lengthy period at an annual rate that ranged between 85-100, murders in SF dropped to 45 victims in 2009, 48 in 2010, 50 in 2011, 68 in 2012, 48 in 2013, and 45 last year.

The city's last homicide before Thursday's was on Saturday, when 19-year-old Ranisha Raven was shot and killed in the Western Addition. No suspects have been named, nor have any arrests been made, in her slaying.
