In what police say was a "random" attack, a 31-year-old Pleasanton woman is dead after a shooting near Pier 14, on San Francisco's Embarcadero.

San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Carlos Manfredi says that police were called to Pier 14, the Pier next to the Ferry Building where Mission Street intersects with The Embarcadero, at 6:30 Wednesday night on reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found the victim, "a 31 year old white female from Pleasanton lying on the pier," Manfredi says, suffering from "a gunshot in the upper torso of her body."

According to the Chron, she was identified Thursday afternoon as 32-year-old SF resident Kathryn Steinle.

Though the investigation is in its early stages and information can change rapidly, at this time Manfredi says that it's believed that the shooter did not know Steinle, as witnesses on the scene didn't hear the suspect and victim interact before the shots were fired. This "suggests that the incident was random," the Chron reports.

Steinle was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where she "inevitably succumbed to her wounds and passed away," Manfredi says. Her death will be San Francisco's 25th homicide for 2015, police confirmed Thursday morning.

According to KTVU, "Family members say the woman had moved from Pleasanton to San Francisco and was walking with her father, when she suddenly collapsed and said, 'oh Dad.'"

ABC7 reports that there were "at least 20 people on and around Pier 14 when the shooting happened," some of whom provided officers with "a possible description of a person of interest," Manfredi says.

Manfredi says that SFPD "flooded the area with officers in search of this person of interest" and tracked the suspect to the corner of Embarcadero and Townsend, where he was detained "pending further investigation." As of publication time, Manfredi says, the man has not been charged.

According to Manfredi homicide investigators are reviewing footage from the surveillance cameras in the area, but could still use the public's help, saying "We're asking anyone, any member of the public, if they captured this on their cellphone, if they witnessed any of this, to please come forward and contact SFPD."
