One man is dead and another in custody following a mid-day Monday shooting at a troubled spot in a Potrero Hill public housing development.
At about 12:50 Monday afternoon, a passerby found 33-year-old San Francisco resident Prince Johnson bleeding from a gunshot wound to the shoulder on the 1000 block of Connecticut Street, which runs between Wisconsin Street and 25th Street in the Potrero Terrace public housing complex.
Medics transported Johnson to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan says.
The Ex reports that officers from SFPD's Park Station nabbed a suspect in the slaying that same day, when they pulled 25-year-old Carneil Hickman-Butler over at around 6:35 p.m. near Ellis and Steiner Streets.
According to the Ex, police "recognized his license plate and white sedan soon after they were advised over police radio to detain anyone inside a vehicle matching that description." Two passengers in the car, including Hickman-Butler, were detained, and Hickman-Butler was eventually questioned by homicide investigators. Shortly thereafter, he was booked into SF County Bail on suspicion of murder, and is being held without bail.
The area where Johnson received his fatal wounds is no stranger to gunfire: in March, two people ended up at SF General after shots were fired in that same area. At publication time, police could not say if they believed the shootings were related.
According to police, Johnson's death is SF's 24th homicide for 2015. It's been nearly three weeks since the city's last slaying, the death of 53-year-old James Collins during a "wild shootout" at Third Street and La Salle Avenue. As of today, SFPD did not have any suspect information to release in Collins' death, and no arrests have been made.
