Resident Chronicle old-timer Carl Nolte reported over the weekend on a threat to longtime North Beach spot Capp's Corner, originally named for former owner Joe Caporale. The place isn't quite as old as some North Beach institutions, but it's been there over 50 years at the corner of Powell and Green, serving drinks, lunch, and dinner to a neighborhood crowd that current owner Tom Gianella describes as, "A nice crowd. Like the old days."

Gianella told Nolte that he was going to have to close the place Wednesday, April 1, depending on if the landlords and he could come to a new agreement. As of Monday, Gianella was photographed in front of the bar by KCBS's Bob Butler saying he had just signed a new eight-year lease. However that turned out to be innacurate, and negotiations with the landlords, the Kuo family went on into Tuesday evening.

As Inside Scoop reports, the final impasse had to do with the restaurant being responsible for ADA improvements, something that they could not afford. So, today, the decision was made to close on April 19 — meaning that what looked like a single happy ending in a sea of sadder ones was not to be. There is, according to the landlord, a buyer waiting in the wings.

Caporale opened the red-checkered-tablecloth joint back in 1963, serving basics like linguini with seafood and lasagne Bolognese. Gianella and his wife Maureen took over the business 27 years ago, keeping it largely the same, and he correctly predicted, despite getting help from governor Jerry Brown and neighborhood poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti — both made phone calls to the landlord last week on Capp's behalf — that the latest lease dispute would mean the end of Capp's.

So, that leaves you a couple of weeks to say goodbye, or to stop in for a final drink or meal at this old-school spot before it disappears.
