A fire in a large building at 22nd and Mission streets has killed one, an adult man, and injured six including a firefighter. According to Mission Local, whose offices are in the second floor of the building, the fire started at 6:50 p.m closer to the 22nd Street side of the building. Here, the building via Google streetview:

Soon the fire was spreading. Fire chief Joanne Hayes White told Mission Local that flames ran through the building's attic, then travelled quickly across the third floor. Mission Local had this footage:

By 7:30 p.m., smoke billowed from the building with pieces of the structure falling into the street. Firefighters started to douse the flames around then. Despite their efforts, flames appeared to advance toward 22nd Street.

Local buses were being rerouted and the street was closed off by dozens of police vehicles and fire trucks.

By 8:30 p.m., the flames began to subside. KTVU reported at 8:45 p.m. that there had been one death.

The Chronicle reports that the fire was still burning as of 11:30 p.m.

Incidentally, the current fire occurred a block away from the location of a five-alarm fire that burned last year.

The Red Cross has established temporary unit for victims of the fire at City College’s Mission Campus. According to chief Hayes White, around 40 people have been displaced.

Mission Local had a photo of a boy and his dog who survived a jump from the burning building.
