In what the Chronicle reports may have been a robbery involving medical marijuana in Berkeley last night, one man was killed with a shotgun and a woman was injured.

The events took place in front of a 99 Cents Only store located at 1941 San Pablo Avenue. There, at around 9:45 p.m. two people were shot near a car. The man, who later died at the scene of the crime, was shot in the face by an attacker who left in a car with others inside. The injured woman was transported to the hospital and her condition is unknown according to a Berkeley police spokeswoman.

The medical marijuana connection has been made by responding officers who told dispatchers that the shooting was related to a pot robbery. However, CBS 5 makes no mention of a medical marijuana robbery and instead reports that the events took place outside of a barbecue restaurant next door to the 99 Cents Only store.

Regardless, it's only the third homicide investigated by Berkeley police in 2014, and no arrests have been made.

SFist has reached out to the Berkeley Police Department and is awaiting comment.
