One apparent suicide and an apparent suicide attempt that occurred within two hours of each other shut down both the Downtown Berkeley and Embarcadero stations last night, one during rush hour.
The first incident occurred around 6:35 p.m. when it was reported that there was a person under a train in the Berkeley station, causing Richmond-bound trains to have to be turned around at Macarthur and single-tracking through the closed station until it reopened at 10:10 p.m. That person was pronounced dead at the scene, as CBS 5 reports, and BART police, fire crews, and the Alameda County coroner all responded
Embarcadero Station was also closed at 9 p.m. Tuesday due to another apparent suicide attempt there when a person was struck by a train at 8:55 p.m., as ABC 7 reports. In that case, the person survived and was transported to the hospital, as CBS reports. Embarcadero reopened at 10:25 p.m. according to BART communications. There are no further reports on that person's condition.
Both incidents caused residual delays in the BART system throughout the evening due to single-tracking in both stations.
If someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide: do not leave the person alone; remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt; and call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.
