The man who was stabbed when he responded to a catcaller harassing his female companion is recovering, but according to a friend, it was a very, very close call.

As you might recall, the victim, who is identified on this fundraising page as Ben Schwartz, was walking home from a friend's house with his girlfriend at 4:45 a.m. Saturday when a man began to catcall her near the corner of Larkin and Ellis. When Schwartz confronted the catcaller, the catcaller stabbed him.

According to the fundraising page, all Schwartz did was ask the catcaller to stop harassing his girlfriend, identified as Miyoko Moody. In response, the catcaller, "immediately started attacking Ben," stabbing him nine times.

"At first we tried to just ignore it, just kind of walk away and make our way home, cross the street and try to take a different path," he told ABC7. However, "It turned violent very quickly, punches thrown," he said. "Next thing I know, I kinda had a knife in the back of my neck."

"Ben was rushed to SF General where he underwent surgery to close a punctured lung and to stitch the deep wounds along the back of his neck, back, face, and arms...The doctors say he is very lucky to be alive considering how close the cuts were to main arteries and one just missing his spinal cord."

Schwartz reportedly has his first doctor's appointment today since the attack. "A couple wounds are aching but Ben's pulling through," a supporter writes.

According to the Chron, Schwartz, who lives in the Tenderloin, is an advertising student at the Art Institute of California and a server at Crustacean on Nob Hill.

Meanwhile, all we still know about Schwartz's assailant is that he fled in a silver sedan. According to a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson, they had no suspect information or details to add at publication time.
