The Mavericks Invitational big wave surfing competition went off without a hitch today. The ninth edition of the occasional contest, which only runs when conditions are ideal, saw waves cresting at more than 40 feet, which led to more than one spectacular wipeout.

Today's contest went on for seven hours of surfing, but 40-year-old South African Grant "Twiggy" Baker — who also won the contest back in 2006 — came out victorious with two perfect-scoring 10-point rides. Local surfers Ryan Seelbach and Grant Washburn, unfortunately didn't break the top six.
