Oakland crime problem shows no signs of abating. On Monday afternoon, an 8-year-old girl was shot in the leg, the victim of a drive-by shooting. According to Oakland Tribune, "The girl was standing with some other people in front of a relative's home in the 2200 block of 65th Avenue near Avenal Avenue when a car drove by and at least two occupants opened fire."
The girl is expected to make a full recovery. No gunfire was returned. No arrests were made.
Yesterday's shooting, following a slew of other fatal shootings, shows that the city is in a critical state. "We are completely out of control," Councilman Noel Gallo said after visited the 65th Avenue neighborhood where the girl was shot. "I have asked our city attorney what it will take to declare a state of emergency."
