This week in wildlife sightings: local nature observer David Cruz spotted this pod of cetaceans over the past week or so, leaping out of the water off of Ocean Beach and generally acting like the carefree, intelligent creatures they are.
To paraphrase the late Douglas Adams: we San Franciscans assume we're more intelligent than dolphins because we have achieved so much — like proper public decorum, football and expensive rent — while all the dolphins have ever done is muck about in the water having a good time. Conversely, the dolphins (probably) believe that they are far more intelligent than us for precisely the same reasons.
Note: some of the photos may actually be of porpoises, but according to this handy graphic, it would appear these are dolphins we're looking at.
