SFist was unable to confirm, on Friday, that a tale of a cyclist chased by a van and robbed at gunpoint in the otherwise quaint and tony Oakland hills was in fact true — all we had to go on was an email from a Berkeley cycling group. But now Oakland police have confirmed that the incident did occur around 3 p.m. Friday on Redwood Road near Pinehurst Road. Also, the cyclist was not only stopped by a dude who jumped out of a van in front of him with a gun, but when the cyclist then tried to swerve around him and escape, the van chased after him, ultimately cornering him and stealing a gold chain and the bicycle he was riding.

The cyclist then walked to a nearby fire station to report the crime.

It appears there was a group of thieves involved, with at least one other thief driving a second vehicle that came up behind the cyclist and boxed him in. People in the Oakland hills, and cyclists who frequent the area, are, understandably freaking out. Robberies like this, you see, are only supposed to happen in the flatlands.
